Alex - your HEQ5 was overhauled (regreased and had the worm mesh set) by Lex at Star Optics.

Thanks for the info Peter.

Just the regrease and the worm mesh set has made this an awesome mount... Couldn't be happier...

It would be great to have no PE but its not really a problem if you are autoguiding and the pe is smooth, ie no quick jumping around. What is a problem is quick jumps is the autoguider will not be fast enough to correct it, this can be a problem for some of the g11 owners who have trouble with the 76 second error as it jump too fast for the guider, even though the g11 has better PE, if it jumps quickly it will perform much poorer than the eq6.

The best thing to remember is that everything is fixable... backlash can be eliminated completely (or near enough) by removing the reduction gears and using belt drives (ala. Avandonk) PE can be almost eliminated or made a hell of a lot smoother by replacing the worm and worm wheel with custom made parts made to a lot finer tolerances.. Whilst doing that would cost a bit of money, it would still be cheaper than buying a mount with 0 backlash and next to no PE...

Replacing the motors with a lot better quality motors would not be out of the question either... with a lot more reduction in them 500:1 reduction or 1000:1 reduction could make for very very smooth tracking and/or greater pointing accuracy..

So much to do, so little time..

I SOULD do a Hypertune and/or some other regrease?

Should I have a look and open my NEQ6?

Weight wise:
I'm either (at the moment) using sw80edpro or sw254newt.; not both at the same time until i get the PHD software to behave ( see my previous posts) on the NEQ6.

Hi Bart

Based on your earlier post that there seems to be something squeaking/screeching out of your mount I would say that you have to decide if you want to open up the mount yourself or pay someone else to do it - since it is relatively new and as I understand it, Synta/SW products carry a 3 years or was it 5 years warranty - it is best that you claim against the warranty terms; that's what I would do if it was mine! Unless you are willing to forgo the warranty!

I did my first ever mount and will do the current one only because they are not new ones; I purchased them used and I am quite technically affait with things mechanical to some extent (though some of my friends might disagree!) and also because I was wanting to improve what I discovered was poor performance from at least the minimum standard.

Many others have used and are using the EQ6 Pro and have many wonderful images to prove that it can be used sucessfully for astro-imaging so if I find that it is just below par, or course I would like to "fix" the issue and give it a try

Overall the fun bit about this hobby is that it is not a straight case of "Yea" or "Nay" but a lot of "what if" & "How?"

HTH

Cheers
Bill
