I agree with Indiana Jones, but so many of the instantly most recognisable movie themes were composed by one man John Williams. His CV is extraordinary (probably only superceded by his bank balance ).....from wikipedia

Chariots of the Gods

Not Vangelis, but the German composer Peter Thomas. Haunting stuff.

Cheers

I'm also a fan of the Bram Stoker's Dracula soundtrack - the composer is brilliant.

Dave[/QUOTE]

Philip Glass again.

Not my fave, but instantly recognisable (IMHO) is "Pirates of the Carribbean"

Exclamation Oh Boy, a Toughee...

Far too many to mention. Popular ones include;

"Dr. Zhivago"; Lara's Theme
"Sound of Music" (The Hills are Alive…)
"Jaws" (Duff, duff, duff, duff,… da da da tadaaaa.)
"2001 : A Space Odyssey" (Thus Spoke Zarathrusta / Blue Danube)
"Gladiator" (Now We Are All Free)
"Ghostbusters" (Who ya gonna call…)
"Harry's Game" by Clannad
"Twilight" No.1 Series with Debussy's Clare de lune
"The Exorcist" Mike Oldfield
"High Road of China"

However, one of my true favourites is"Koyaanisqatsi", main theme by Philip Glass, which is quite emotionally engaging.

Have to have a longer think about this one, before I can be definitive….

Note: I think even some of the television shows have better ones;
I.e. "The Blue Planet"
...or those which are instantly recognised
- Hawaii Five-O
- Shaft

Why are we even discussing this. Clearly the best movie theme music in the history of cinema is the Peter Gunn theme as used in the blues Brothers, followed by, in second place She Caught the Katy from the Blues Brothers with 3rd spot going to Shake your Tailfeather from...... the Blues Brothers. Positions 4 through 10 are open to suggestions as there are several memorable tunes in the Blues Brothers that are hard to split.

I suppose a movie score composer/ writer has done his/ her job
really well when just hearing the mere mention evokes beautiful,
rich emotional memories locked way back in your conscience.

Some of mine:

Gladiator (Encha mentioned it already)
The Mission ( Beren mentioned)

Out of Africa, (the aerial scene)
Dances with Wolves
Antarctica (Vangelis)
Risky Business (Tangerine Dream compositions)

I agree, too many...

Music is a truly amazing invention by us humans...so many emotions!

Good thread!

Steve

Is the "Theme from Days of Our Lives" allowed. Its not actually from a movie. But you ever listened to it. Not just the start of it but the whole thing. It goes for about 7 min and its really a very good piece of music IMO.

Actually, the theme from Gladiator was written and sung by Lisa Gerrard, an Australian singer. The song was scored and conducted by Hans Zimmer.

Are you a closet particle physicist, Jen ?

Wasn't the the song of Beverley Hills Cop, the "Neutron Dance" by The Pointer Sisters?

I would have though your tune would have been "Pretty Woman" - you'no the Roy Orbison tune??

Ergo.

"Pretty woman, walking down the street
Pretty woman, the kind I like to meet
Pretty woman
I don't believe you, you're not the truth
No one could look as good as you
Mercy!!!
"

(Surely highly appropriate for our true green enslaver???)
