The bigger they are the more effect they can have, it depends which way the sun is facing. But they can interfere with electronic and satellite communications, power grids and such.

Gunna sound really dumb here, But please make sure the one you make is a tight fit. I bought one for a 70mm hole and the hole on my dust cover (10" dob) is about 50mm.
Looking at the sun last time there was sunspots, about a month or so ago, and the wind blew it off the hole and BANG!!!!!!!!!!!! i had some unwanted bright light enter my right eye. to my luck i was pulling away from the scopes eyepiece so no extreme damage. But bloody lucky
