We're being humane when we put down our beloved animals, but we're animals when we do the same for our beloved humans.
I don't get it.

Hi mozzie

Yes, a very day. We have two "puppies" 14 and 13 years old - totally understand your feelings.

My heart goes out to you. We had to make that painful decision 5 years ago. Promised ourselves we could never go through that again. However 6 months later we decided to share our lives with 2 West Highland Terrier brothers we called Butch and Sundance. 2 years after that we made room for a head strong little Shih Tsu madam and called her Cassidy. There isn't a day goes by that these 3 don't make us laugh. We dread the days when we have to make 'the decision' with these guys too, but all the years of joy they'll give us between now and then and the knowledge that we've given them more of a home and a life and love that they could ever have wished for will hopefully give us solace when that time comes, just like the solace you should feel now that you gave your friend a fabulous life and a painless end.

Hi Peter
You have my condolences and my thoughts go out to you, I lost my best pal in March of this year to cancer, the vet came to our house and Blue passed away peacefully in my arms, and only two weeks ago I had to endure the same with Storm (Blues older brother) who had a long term spine problem and his back legs finally gave up the ghost. It is heart wrenching even when you know it is for the right reasons. You just have to remember that at least you both shared the same love and affection for each other over the years and think that there are some poor animals out there that aren't so lucky. We have two rescue German Pointers now, Hunter and Gunner who have managed to fill the void in our lives and they help ease the grief. I know it is hard but be happy that you gave a caring home, comfort, enjoyment and affection to a friend who may not have been so lucky if he didn't have you
Best wishes
Gordon

Hi Peter,

It's a very sad thing to hear. I love dogs, I've been around them all my life - they are our best friends. There's no easy way of dealing with the sadness of loving a loved pet and friend. My condolences to you, and to your family.

I've had my share of pet losses, especially since my chosen pets (domestic rats) live such short lifes, and are highly prone to various cancers and lung issues. It's never easy watching them go, even more so when it's prolonged and you have to make that hard decision. I've done it once, never again.

Dave

We had to put down our family cat some months ago. She was 20 years old and very sick. We were all very sad. These times are difficult Mozzie.

Just read through these posts tonight. It's a horrible thing to have to do - we did it recently for our <12month old cat - but when further therapy becomes futile, at least you have the option of being kind to animals.

Our cat had been at the vet for 4 days before we put her to sleep. The dog went absolutely nuts when she smelt the cats collar that we brought home with us. The dog still seems a bit lonely.

Our kids are almost 4 & 2 - the older one occasionally mentions the cat, but usually just says "Cinders is very sick and won't be coming home from the vet". Bit hard to know when they start to understand "life"...

Regards
David T

P.S. Mozzie - I met you at Astrofest - I have to 8inch LX-90 ACF.

Sorry for your loss. It gets easier.

I know how sad you feel mozzie, we lost our doberman Khan to liver failure on the 19th Sept he was 10 years old and had never been ill, we had to make the decision.

It gets a bit easier as time goes on, but I will always have great memories that will never go.

Just keep those good memories and all will be ok.

If it should be that I grow weak
And pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then you must do what must be done,
For this last battle cannot be won.

You will be sad, I understand.
Don't let your grief then stay your hand.
For this day, more than all the rest,
Your love for me must stand the test.

We've had so many happy years.
What is to come can hold no fears.
You'd not want me to suffer so;
The time has come -- please let me go.

Take me where my need they'll tend,
And please stay with me till the end.
Hold me firm and speak to me,
Until my eyes no longer see.

I know in time that you will see
The kindness that you did for me.
Although my tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering I've been saved.

Please do not grieve -- it must be you
Who had this painful thing to do.
We've been so close, we two, these years;
Don't let your heart hold back its tears.

My condolences Peter, I feel the pain with you mate,
We also lost our cat 0f 10 years a few months ago to kidney failure where the vet could do no more to help and I had to make that same decision. What was really difficult was trying to brace the kids 6 and 8 year olds for it.
Our home feels empty without our little white mate who was always close by.

Daniel.

So sorry to hear that Peter, Yes mans best friend, I would be devastated if something happened to my best mate. Unconditional love is hard to find in life and often our pets give this so freely we take it for granted. Must take my Bella for a nice walk around the lake today.
My sympathy goes out to you and your family.
