What would we do if CN and IIS are off the air?

It's down for me too. Several hosts in the US have had threats of distributed denial of service attacks made if they don't pay up a ransom.

This is a note I received from my host for a website hosted in the US:

Quote:
...our network provider has been identified as possible targets in an extortion attempt to bring down the entire network unless a large sum of money is paid. It is assumed that the extortionists will use a multi gigabit Denial of Service attack to flood our connections effectively denying legitimate traffic from reaching our servers.

We are taking this threat very seriously and already have counter measures in place to mitigate the attack as much as possible. Our network provider is already aware of these threats and has been preparing their own counter measures for a potential onslaught of malicious traffic.

Please note that it is very important to understand that large scale Denial of Service attacks that are in the gigabit range are EXTREMELY difficult to filter and should we be attacked it will likely disrupt service for several hours, or even longer.
So Cloudynights might be the victim of that. Otherwise it could simply be a database error. Here's hoping they'll get back soon.

At about midnight every freetoair (nondigital) went down too, so since it was very moonlit, and there was no CN and nothing on TV (Nine (NBN3) is hopeless) there nothing for it but to head to bed.

So I guess I'd get a lot more sleep.
