Trevor,

As someone who employs 50+ people, who work in relatively close quarters, I concur that if they are sick they should stay home. But seriously expecting me to "gladly" pay them to do so (outside of their entitlements of course) - you've got to be kidding? I would be broke in short order. "Cough, Cough - taking a week off"

I only have one pet peeve - the people who take their "sick" day basically on a roster, like clockwork each month or so. Always on a Monday funnily enough. And never being so sick that they need to have multiple days off or go to the doctor to get a certificate.

I have had very dedicated staff who have never taken a sick day in years, and then have become really ill, and used it all up. I have many times continued to pay them (although I have no requirement to do so). The "clockwork sickies" get nothing from me, not even the slightest compassion. Sick days are there for when you're sick. That's all.

I've been fortunate to need only a couple of sick days a year on average for many years. Hence I have this huge sick leave entitlement (ours carries over each year). A nice safety net to have.

Well, it's been 10 days and I am still suffering and still off work. I dare not take this into the factory and air-conditioned office.

Sorry to hear you are still crook Barry .

I empathise with you - I had 'the plague' (fortunately just the flu not the black plague) last year and was crook for about 7 weeks, having 3 weeks off work to try not to spread the lergy. It was the first time I've ever used such a block of sick leave (in the 18 years I have worked in the public health system) and as such I have accrued enough sick leave to have about 7 months off if ever I get really crook (hoping I never have to use it though).

Hope you are getting lots of care from your family and that you are back on you feet again soon.

Kerrie
