I've still a fair collection of vinyl.
Most are still in good condition
But I've kept a few that may just be beyond redemption, but they're sentimental favourites.
Sleep Dirt and Apostrophe (frank zappa) have water damage. Still playable sort of. Should upgrade to cd, one day.

One of the advantages of getting older is that the old Vinyl/CD argument is overtaken by rubbish hearing.

20 years ago the poor quality of CD used to make me weep (especially the sound stage) - thank goodness for Linn for keeping the faith.

Nowadays who cares - it all boils down to a twenty buck pair of headphones on a train!

PS - Last LP listend to: TV21; A thin red line.

PPS - Watch out where those huskies go JJJ

Found the answer in the link provided by Jason, thanks.

"As a CD plays, the two channels of audio data (not including overhead) are pulled off the disc at a rate of just over 1400 kilobits per second."

Don't try it with video tapes - the suckers won't go in when you turn them over!

I have a pretty good HI-FI/6.1 Home theatre with an SA-CD/DVD Audio player. I had always believed that CD's are a fair bit better than vinyl records but over time I've found certain music just won't work on CD while other music really kick vinyls butt.

For Digital
Pink Floyd-Dark side of the moon.

Great on vinyl
Fantastic on CD but
Awesome on SA-CD in 5.1 audio.

For Vinyl
The Doors-LA Woman

Great on DVD-Audio
Fantastic on CD but
Perfect on Vinyl

It really just sounds "right" on vinyl as IMO the pops and warmth is much more suited to the "bluesy" type sound.

PS: GMAN, you have me intrigued about what 80's gems you have 45's. I remember in 1989 at Brashes Southland people would buy a CD player for $699 and later come in with a crate of old vinyl and ask if they could trade it in for CD's. As we didn't take tradeins sometimes they would dump them in the skip near the Target exit. Sometime we would get them for nothing as well.

I love my vinyl and that raw sound it produces, all the other mediums are crisp and clear but vinyl is earthy and has an original feel about it.

I've about 250 albums which all get played often.

Cheers

Indeed - the finest primary audio source ever. And they produced a series of records too which were of the highest quaility. Still doing it I believe.

yeah I know someone who "almost " did that to .. I think he even got as far as opening and removed the cd ready to turn over before .. the winds of change whistled through his ears and made him realise technology moves quite swiftly

Vinyl

Interesting debate

I've owned many fine turntables (3 Linns, a Sota Sapphire, Micro Seiki etc, I've ended up with a Rega Planar 3 and Linn MC cartridge) and still have a large collection of vinyl.

Vinyl played on a good turntable with a good stylus, MM or MC through a good rig will always sound good if its a good recording and the Vinyl hasn't been damaged (easy to do). Vinyl played on a mediocre turntable with a substandard cartridge will sound poor.

Its not that CD is a better format, its just has a more consistent quality, even on low priced players.

Best listening experience I ever had was a live Jazz recording played on a Krell CD player, through an Audible Illusions pre-amp, single ended triode monoblocks driving a pair of Mageneplanar MG20's. Unforgettable - so was the price.

As I write this I'm listening to my favourite DVD - Unledded - now that adds a dimension to the listening experience.

There's nothing like the rich sound that vinyl gives.

Who remembers having to go through the copies of "Thick as a Brick" to find one that wasn't bent way out of shape by the packaging! Mine was not brilliant, but I saw one that flipped the stylus out of the groove on each revolution!!

I do remember seeing the local radio station at an outside broadcast at the local show and they had one and two cent pieces which rode on the pickup arm!

I do have a "Mint" boxed set of Queen albumns that have never seen a needle.

Everything else has had numerous outings.
All of my KISS albumns were played constantly but one albumn that is almost out is KISS - Double Platinum.
I'm not ashamed to say I was in the KISS ARMY

OK, now I've done it. I went back to our place (the kids are there, we have moved elsewhere) and found all my 45s and brought them back for a spin. I'll amaze and delight you with some titles later! Eg. "Eleanor Rigby" by The Zoot, 1970 vintage

Most of my hi-fi is Linn and I have long drooled over an LP12, but could never quite come up with the cash, I've got about 750 bits of vinyl and 400 CDs. In general I prefer the vinyl on my Planar 3 to CDs on my Genki. However, some records are badly pressed and sound crap, whereas on the other hand some CDs are badly mastered and sound crap, especially the earlier ones. Classical music suffered the most I think, presumably due to it's complexity.

I think that whether you prefer CD or vinyl is really a taste thing, same as red wine or white wine, bitter or lager etc. No recording system has the same response as YOUR ears (not unless you have oscilloscopes on the side of your head anway) and no recording system is perfect - and that's before you get to the playback. These days, no recording actually sounds like a live performance either and there are so many decisions going into how a recording is mixed and mastered that everything we hear is the result of someone's personal taste. So, personally, I think the vinyl/CD arguments are rather pointless....
