I actually did removed it only for the sake of keep this important discussion thread open. My point was that to eliminate such people disturbing you is to confront them directly so they can have no reply.

The question remains.
Is it offensive to try and influence others or is it more an offence to disturb them in the first place - especially when in the privacy of their homes?
Note: I have had one door knocker this morning already about 15 minutes ago. It was two JW persons. I opened the door and said one single word "No!", and just closed the door. One of them protested from the other side of the door - "Can we leave something..." - along with something else. I opened the door, told them "You are trespassing. So leave at once or I'll call the police. Do not disturb me again." I again closed the door.

As they say; "You can't win, and you can't even come second."

So what else can you do?

I usually listen for the first part of what they're selling or calling about, then decide whether to cut them off with a polite:

"Can I just stop you there so we're not wasting each others time. I'm not interested. Thanks. <click />"

or whether I continue to listen to them. I have had a couple of legitimate phone surveys that I have taken the time to help with. Like Brisbane City Council's survey about traffic flows when they were researching new bridges etc in my area.

Our last trip up to Rainbow Beach was purchased through telemarketers.
Some of them I don't mind.
I try not to be rude to the operators, they're only doing their job.
A firm "No Thanks" and put the phone down is all you need to do.
Just HATE having my much needed rest time disturbed by these calls.

Why do some people have to hijack a thread, and show their rotten and nasty side
As I and others have said get an answering machine or a private number
This thread was beaten to death within the last couple of years and the same nastiness came out
These people are only doing a job.

It seems a bit hypocritical to me to say these telemarketers are a pest and then except some of their services.

They hit a gold mine in Kilcoy with that particular offer. Seems every other person I know in town bought holidays off them.

Thumbs down

I am sorry. I don't think this is fun at all.

While writing below this I had two real estate agents fifteen minutes apart knocking on my door asking if I would like a valuation. Now three in three hours!

As for;

Actually that is the exact problem in a nutshell. These <whoever> prey on the fact of the kindness of the respondent - especially targeting women as they are usually more passive and often product savvy. They know this, and they only become a problem when people seriously tolerate their interference. I.e. This is why, as a male, you often hear; "is the lady / Mrs.<whoever> of the house in at the moment?" They know where the softer target is!
The fault is therefore not necessarily the marketer but all those (a minority of perhaps 20%) who will tolerate such open invasion!
I do notice here (just an observation) you are more than happy to support them, but on the other hand you complain about being disturbed. To me you seem to think there is some general balance, and that they seemingly mostly, if not al, act in "good faith."
Bottom line is they see it as an advertising or selling opportunity, and if it actually wasn't successful, they would not do it. So called "personal targeting" is actually mostly considered less evasive - either via direct or electronic mail, junk faxing by telemarketers, door-to door. By combined, it is very evasive on our private lives. Cleverly they distinguish themselves as instead advertising, like letterboxing, TV or Radio advertising, newspapers, etc. (I mean even IIS has such advertising to the right!)
Yet combined produces levels bordering on total saturation - but it becomes even more tempting to push the assault beyond this. (Like where I live at the moment. 45 in three months is crazy - that is 180 per year just in door knocks!)

In fact Lindsay Tanner, when in opposition in July 2004 said;
"Many Australians are sick of the unwarranted intrusion of telemarketers into their homes. A recent survey found more than two-thirds of Australians were uncomfortable receiving unsolicited telephone calls. ... Australians value their time at home and many resent the regular unsolicited phone calls which disrupt their relaxation and family life."
So IMO, people through their kindness are actually inflicting on the majority these scientific methods of to coerce, manipulate and intimidate into their way of thinking. Why is it that the 8 hours of play we get seems to be getting smaller and smaller and through stress no-one gets time to relax anymore. This is why these hawkers and telemarketers are so much hated by us consumers - it is the invasion of what little freedom and time that we have.

Note: For me bringing this up on a Saturday morning is soooooo frustrating!

Actually I was trying to be very careful with my words here. I never meant you were being hypocritical at all. What you have said is exactly what these marketers really want to hear. They use your good will and tolerance as their tactic to sell things or influence others, knowing full well it maybe sometimes rather inconvenient. This is why they will never go away, and why the "Do Not Call Register" will always somehow be circumvented.

those complaining about people coming to their house, just get a "no hawkers" or "no salesmen" sign for your front door - simple.
