Hi
I have two very similar computers that have been running now for a few years now but when I first built them I had trouble with one of them them freezing on some CPU intensive programs the other has not been any bother.

I eventually found that the CPU was getting two hot (around 70 degrees) and shutting down. I cut a hole in the side of the computer above the CPU and mounted a fan to suck the air away from the processor. Worked like a charm. The processor doesn't even reach 56 degrees now.

Duncan,

Sis 661 FX Chipset

'661FM2' for Intel Pent 4 Processors.
512MB RAM

Win XP service pack 3 (genuine owner)

2.8 Ghz Intel Celeron processor..

Just to eliminate a few other suggestions earlier in the
thread I have so far:

1.Run the PC direct from the power point instead of
on a 4-way powerboard.
2.Changed the laser mouse over to another mouse

No freezes so far but it's only run for maybe an hour
since I did those.

TBH mate, from those specs i would be thinking about upgrading your rig anyway, i know its not old in the grand scheme of things, but the average life expectancy of a mother/circuit board is around 5 years. but fainling that, things i would try.

BIOS upgrade, maybe a flash to the BIOS might help

reset BIOS, quite often resetting the BIOS can help, this is just usually as simlpe as reseating a jumper on the board.

new CMOS battery, after it boots, has it lost any settings? time and date?

Reseating the M/board - i have seen things like this in the past caused by bad earths with internal equipment

Change the CAS and TRAS settings on the memory, if the RAM has issues, downclocking it so to speak, can make it more stable.

Or use the excuse to treat yourself to some new hardware !!

Thanks for the advice Duncan, Barry,

Dunc: an upgrade just isn't necessary.
We'll run this into the ground and if it falls
over there are a few similar spec PCs in the
house as a backup.

FWIW, I think I might have found the culprit though.
I removed this green adaptor from the PS2 port
and the Logitech Laser mouse.

USB mouse direct to a spare USB port.

No problems for 2 days now.....

Intermittent probs...dontcha hate em
