No, no no!! You can't do this!  The question was: "what is your favourite" - i.e. one, singular, uno, ich, eine - not two, or three! LOL!

My favorites are 2001:A Space Odyssey and any of the Star Trek and Star Wars movies and BattleStar Galactica.

"The Thing" by John Carpenter (1982) was a good scary sci-fi movie.
Didn't see another movie for months after that!
Worth a look if you can find it.

Yep. Its hard to go past the Matrix series and Starwars or the original Stargate movie. But for something a little different I would vote for "The Last Starfighter" for SciFi. And for disaster movies, the "28Days" series.

The 1984 version of Dune written & directed by David Lynch would probably be my favourite as I love the book by Frank Herbert.
I used to dream about Melange.

Which one should I mention?
Planet of the Apes (1968) was an early favourite of mine.
But I can't underestimate the original Star Trek series.
2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) also deserves to be mentioned…
And the Matrix trilogy.
But since I should give only one name… I would go for…
The Solaris by Andrey Tarkovskiy (1972 version in Russian) possibly because, Stanislav Lem's plot was as philosophical/physics based as Arthur C. Clarke's plot for the Odyssey but was more character driven, and as a teenager, I fell in love with Natalya Bondarchuk.
I am not a film critic, but I strongly suggest you see the film.

Fav Film?
Oh dear...talk about a tough call.
Well, "Rollerball" was interesting, "Soylent Green" was curiously memorable (shame about the ham Heston though) "The Blob" (recall Steve McQueen?) was fun as was "the Thing". "Logan's Run" was entertaining thanks to the talent - such as Jenny Agutter - visual talent (sorry ladies) but being held to pick one and only one........
2001 is the one. (shame about the switch from Saturn to Jupiter but good that Bruce Dern got to fly past Saturn on the Valley Forge...)
Though, "Earth vs. The Flying Suacers" had a certain comedy about it all...and similar (if memory serves) in a few aspects to that famous and very memorable flick "The Day the Earth Stood Still".

Blade Runner .. all cuts are good, but Final Cut is very good.

My current favourite sci-fi movie is Serenity and i also love the short lived series firefly.
