my video drivers go back to Feb last year, and there are no newer versions.

might be a good time to post how to enable the "hidden" administrator account in Vista ...

PS why did I delete 0.9.1? It was working.
Goto Microsoft Help and Support

Then goto the lower menu and click on "Downloads and Updates"

Thanks for the help so far.
Re-booted computer after d/l of latest C++ library and latest Video driver as suggested. Not confident about either because of lack of knowledge.

Not using Vista --- good old XP works OK for my other software.

Still getting "Runtime" error although got a quick glimpse of Stellarium start up screen before screen blacked out.
Will try to get back 0.9.1.

Any other suggestions please?
Peter

i have tried this on three PC's, one with a Vanilla install of XP SP3, and two that have been going for ages, the drivers, patches and various other bits and bobs are up to date, on them, and i have checked various other stuff, that might be affecting it.

i still cant get it to work.

... but i am not defeated !!

Any of you running Nortons.....if you are, turn it off. It maybe interfering with the program.

Try downloading Stellarium again and reloading it, that may work.

I'm lucky, I use a Mac so I have no problems.

I could also run it on my PC's....they're dual boot with Linux.

Whoops! Installed on Windows XP Home, all MS updates in place.
System hung twice immediately after starting Stellarium, no splash screen, nothing. Ctrl+Alt+Delete not working, hit the power off button. Exactly the same after system restart.
Uninstall, come back when the bugs are fixed!
Cheers

For those who are having trouble look in your documents and settings\yourname\application data\stellarium and see what is in the log file. If anything has been done it will indicate where the program stopped.

The program has been extensively tested on many systems but we can't test everything. Most of the problems are due to the "gui" and the Qt 4.4.3 framework needing upgrades to video drivers. I had touble with the SiS drivers in version nine and an update fixed the problem I have had no trouble with SiS since.

My laptop has an intel 965 display and it crashed initially till I located the new intel screen driver. The Nvidia Gforce2 card needed an up graded driver but did not crash it just ran slow. This driver I was able to update via the control panel/system/hardware automatically by telling it to update the driver . Other than these the only other problems causing have been syntax errors in the ssystem.ini file, stars.ini file and old versions of the config.ini file that don't get overwritten by the new version.

Probably the first place to look at is the config.ini file. Remove the older one and let the program generate a new one. particularly if the new version has been installed without uninstalling the older versions.

Let's know how these ideas work.

Barry

I had deleted 10.1 and re-installed 9.1 and 9.1 is working properly.
I notice that the above log.txt refers to v10.1.
The config.ini is for 9.1 so the 10.1 version has already been overwritten.

Before I go any further I thought it best to let you know this information.

Hope it helps.

Hi peter

That log file tells me straight away that your video driver needs to be up dated. You did not say what your video was.

Try what I did with my Gforce card. Go to the control panel - system - hardware - device manager - display adpters and update driver. Make sure you let it update from the net.

Stellarium is not compiled with Visual C++. It is compiled with MinGW and Qt 4.4.3 . They are similar and some people have actually compiled with Visual C++ but there are many differences and the source code is designed for Qt 4.4.3 . Qt 4.4.3 was released last September with many changes to the handling of OpenGL and thus many video drivers need an upgrade.

G'day Barry,
I re-installed V0.10.1 just to see what the log file would have in it after the crash.
Crashed exactly the same as before. Pushed the power button to restart my system, restarted, and then went to Application Data to find the Log file.
No Stellarium folder exists.
The program hangs the second I click on the Stellarium icon.
My Display drivers are the latest available.

Hi Chris

I just checked the intel drivers for the 82865G chipset. The latest update to this chipset is Feb 2008 although the actual video driver date is 2005.

I would be pretty sure that none of these will be compatable with Qt 4.4.2 or Qt 4.4.3. There were some major changes to the way OpenGL is handled at these updates.

I have an acer laptop (video 965 mobile chipset) that came with an unsuitable video driver. I check around and found a driver update for Oct 2008 and that works great. I found Nvideo driver for the Gforce date Jan 2009.

So untill Intel supplies an updated driver I don't think you will have any joy.

Barry

In that case it's bye bye Stellarium!
Pity, but there are plenty of alternatives.

video drivers

not sure that its the drivers,

I downloaded it on to my 4 week old (new model) laptop, and get the same errors as below.

(curiously, I had previously loaded the beta version on to a 4 year old laptop and that worked??)

if it is the drivers, from a product acceptance point of view, it wont take long to loose its reputation, when it doesn't run on a lot of systems.

wish I hadn't removed 9.1

Seems to me the developers of Stellarium are shooting themselves in the foot, maybe both feet?
If version 9 works with no problems, and they are now only promoting version 10 which doesn't, and they are only providing links to version 10, people are going to turn off in a big way!
Saying that hardware manufacturers need to supply drivers to suit Stellarium makes me ask which is the cart and which is the horse?
Oh well, as I say, there are plenty of alternatives out there, not as pretty maybe, but...

google eyed

thanks Chris

I did google it, there seems to be a product called "stellarium portable 9.1"
down loadable from the usual suspects, - dont know if this is the same thing or not.

even if I can find it I'm dreading trying to get computer-control working again

(Chris, I lived in Kyneton for about 20 years, I didn't even know it was legal to go outside at night without an environment suit on.)
