I always check the radar loop at BOM and I notice the around Norah head and Lake Macquarie seem to have some severe storms.
Had a few nasty ones come through today actually and had to do some unplugging..
Didn't do my live yacka which was in the water not far from where the lightning hit (with a puff of steam !!! and loud crack) much good either. Reeled it in a few minutes later and it was dead and stiff as a board.

This one came up very very quickly , and we figured it was riskier to try to walk off Nobbys Wall (a 3 km walk) as it approached than to take shelter under the tower.

Was very scarey .... I check the BOM radar loop aways now before going up the breakwalls to fish.

Was caught up there one pther day a couple of years ago when what can only described as tornado with everything caught me unawares .... lightning strikes all over the place , all I could do was shelter between two big 10 ton concrete blocks with my head between my knees and my rods reeled in and layed down , and the trolley and bait tank left take their chances parked up against the wall on top of the breakwater. Needless to say as soon there was a break in the wind and lightning I skiddaddled. Was there by myself and have to admit it was a very dangerous and scarey experience I'm in no rush to repeat ever again.

Yep the first storm today was a fizzer , a bit of distant rumbling and bit of a breeze and that was it.
The second one was very violent here at Gateshead , turned off and unplugged the powerboard the TV , DVD and HiFi are on, and unplugged the computers. Sounded like some close ground strikes and it was pretty dark , wild and nasty here for about an hour.

Could say that was hard "yacka"

About the only thing I can think of that might protect you fully from large transient currents is a lightning cage, but trying to erect one around an observatory might be a bit of a problem.

Hope you're back in business with minimal red tape before too long Gary. Going to miss not seeing more pics from your "labour of love" scope.

Thanks again people! for that, Our power went out this morning for some time as a high voltage fuse link blew out, also the transformer has suffered some damage and shall be repaired soon. At least the power is back on. New GPUSB ordered today and the Digital drive is on it`s way to ATS (Peter) to check out if it`s fixable. Stepper motors may be ok as well as the PC. So should come in to $400-$500 damage (fingers crossed).
I can feel some star trail pictures coming but I have a few images taken the last week or two I havn`t processed so that shall give me something to do as well as make a decent mirror cell for the scope..
Thanks again Guys and Gals
