I watched this on DVD on the weekend. I haven't seen the original so watched it on its own merits.
As a sci-fi, it was enjoyable. Light entertainment.
Sort of reminded me of "War of the Worlds" with the aliens/spheres laying in wait under the ground for the right moment.
Not edge of the seat type stuff but a good way to spend 100 minutes.

The new version isn't as dramatic as the original but of course the special effects are more modern. I liked the switch from the nuclear issues to the environmental ones. I thought Keanu Reeves played the alien as a detached observer quite well. However, the reasoning behind his change of mind was not developed seriously enough and the ending seemed abrupt. John Cleese's role was too brief.
Overall, enjoyable but needed to have more depth.

I loved the original too................and I definitely LOVED the forbidden planet!!!! Basically I'm into Sci-fi big time and have been since I was about 7. I'm heading off now to pick up a Blu-Ray of this flick now. See what happens Hopefully the sound will make up for any short commings.
Remakes rarely impress me...I think they destrotyed "Battlestar Galagtica" That's a long story......and I'm not impressed with what I have seen in the latest attempt of a star treck movie...I mean come on...using actors from Home and Away.....LOL........Guess I just expect too much. Each to thier own.

I was mega dissapointed with this flick. I was expecting big things. The part that really made me wanna puke was the guy supervising the drone pilots, over acting at its worst and they should fire the military advisor.

Destroyed Battlestar Galactica? I think that the new series was so superior to the old (what I saw as kiddy sci-fi) version it's incredible. Not sure that there was actually anything to like in the old series - the kid and his fluffy robot dog that sqeaked? The camp acting? LOL! Each to their own

Forbidden Planet (1956).
Would that ever be a good film to remake if they take it seriously!
Loved the original. Great concept ... creatures created from the depths of the "id". Way ahead of its time.
And Leslie Nielsen, the captain of the space ship, is still making films.

No worries Chris...no need to serve my words up on a platter...quoters rarely draw the best out in people...If you don't understand my sarcasm, I wont hold it against you. Lets just say I'll side with the fluffy robotic dog anytime over some blond headed cyborg constantly on heat.
LOVED the movie! "The Day The earth Stood Still" Yea the new one as well. I know, I probably need me head read. The HDMA sound was Awesome "as usual" ...Loved the SUB...really blew us out of the chair...I've heard better...but still...it rated high with us...The timing and mix was also great with definite separation...not quite as good as irobot...but it was there...sound was just under 8/10...IMO...
I think you get more out of it if you liked Independence Day- with the Military build up and general hysteria, The Abys- with like the shiny sphere concept and contact, Matrix- computer infiltration, Spider Man- Sand Man like special effects with the ever growing Nano tech cloud eating away at all it touches........list goes on from there... Special Effects where pretty good on Full HD spread across a "BIG" screen.
Over all...despite the differences...the story held up...sound was great & picture good enough. Nothing to complain about...I normally buy my blurays & would of been very happy if I had done so with this one, instead of renting it like I did...I'll be shelling out for it to add to my collection.
I was surprised after reading most of the posts here...but that often happens to me with movies others rate as disappointing. Hopefully most will think the same of the new star trek movie...but I doubt it...then again..I might be pleasantly surprised. Took a while for the new enterprise series to grow on me.....but that was more to do with the change of intro and the fact that many of the characters do not appear to be as interesting...none the less...I have enjoyed many an episode in of that.
Back to -The Day The Earth Stood Still...Having watched the earlier version, and despite elements of the story being different...I got a lot out of having viewed the original version first...If your into Blu-Rays for the Home Entertainment value...then you want see it as a waste of time...Beats the hell out of some of the crap that's been coming out.

Quoting is a most legitimate way to commence a retort. It helps lead into a reply - that's why the button is provided. There are plenty of "quoters" here on IIS. It's used a-plenty.
I inderstand your "sarcasm" plenty Dave - just didn't think it was terribly well presented. Sorry. Lets just say that your definition of "porn" is quite different to most people's I know.
PS - the "with like the shiny sphere concept" was "The Sphere", not "Abyss".
Not looking for an argument with you old bean.

Hey, does a pretty brunette (if that's what she was in the original B&W version) say "Gort, klatu verada nickto" anywhere in the movie?? If not, it's not a proper re-make and I won't be watching it!
BTW, I shudder to think how Hollywood will/would destroy a re-make of a classic like Forbidden Planet. I'd prefer they make NEW classics.
Cheers, Marcus

Yep - and when I was doing my HSC in 1980 we had the choice of studying The Tempest in its traditional form, or taking the movie route. It wasn't a real hard choice. It's still my favourite film of all time.
If they do a remake, then that's OK - however good or not it turns out, it won't ever take away from the original. Actually, I'll generalise here and suggest that remakes are all OK - as we're not being told as such that the original is being replaced, and won't have access to it any more. Often as not, a remake will re-kindle interest in the original, so this is good too. I can't imagine that a large percentage of the young movie-going public has even heard of the original Forbidden Planet. Maybe a remake will prompt some to watch the original as well.

indeed.
Forbidden planet was so ahead of its time, that i still think it stands up today, even if the effects are looking a little dated.
I think for me it totally encapsulates that image of 50's Sci-Fi with flying saucers and ray guns etc. in much the same way that Blade Runner summed up that 80's industrial sci-fi look, that lead to The Matrix etc. such movies are priceless
i keep looking for it in 1080p, or at least 720p and a good HD-Audio or at least DTS soundtrack would be excellent.
