I live about 250km North of Adelaide and saw this as well. Truly one of the most spectacular things I have ever seen in the night sky.

Excellent capture Doug. Looks like it would have really lit up the night sky.

Awesome, shame it's not something we can all experience first-hand
Has anyone invented the time-machine yet?

yep.. we saw it
three of us saw it at ASV Heathcote site.. here's my poor description written minutes afterwards as we tried to figure out what it was..
Friday Night/Saturday Morning
Heathcote LMDSS
12:49am local time (1449 UT Friday)
Neil picked it up first in the northwest and attracted attention from
Maurice and I to turn and look around.
At first there were two bright objects, one brighter than jupiter the
other a bit less bright a few degrees apart low in the west. the
brightest one had a very long bright train (>5 degrees) and the other
one looked more like a bright satellite. then it become clear that
there were several other fainter bits some also with faint trails all
travelling in the same direction and at the same speed. the speed was
a little faster than a plane or satellite but much slower than any
other meteor i have even seen.
it started low in the northwest, travelled below Jupiter low in the
west and kept travelling south towards the pointers where we lost them
in the trees. the display lasted around 30 seconds. plenty of time for
the three of us to all see 'them' and move across the observing field
to follow them down towards the south.
the brightest one varied in brightness quite significantly, brilliant
white and perhaps even 'sputtering' some other colours. at it's
brightest maybe -4 mag, but it was the slow motion and long dusty
train and collection of them that was amazing. the most bizarre meteor
i have ever seen. at first the brightest meteor looked like a plane
with it's front light shining a bright narrow beam through dust/cloud,
except that the light was trailing the object instead of in front.
glad i know what it was now!

Ok so which was it
Meteors or the satellites?????????
A friend and I saw it last night. We are in Northern suburbs of Adelaide.
Was truly amazing. We counted about 10 with one being much larger and brighter. We watched it travel the whole sky over us.
Something we have never seen before. Was truly amazing.
Very curious to know exactly what it was we saw

Hi folks, my first post here, only found the site because I saw the show 12.50 Saturday morning, thought I'd try and find out what it was. Was amazing! I liked the discription of a plane, I first thought a jet liner was on fire, till I saw another piece much higher in the sky travelling with it at the same speed. We were in Castlemaine central Vic. Thanks for the info, cheers

Doug, sorry to see such a nice shot 'ruined'
I'm wondering over what area this event was visible. So far we have Adelaide, 250km north of Adelaide and over to Heathcote in Victoria. Any sightings from further afield?
Another point, on the photo the trails are closer together at the bottom than they are at the top. I would expect the fragments to diverge as they descend. Is the photo 'upside down'? I know we normally don't think that way for astro photos but this is now effectively a terrestrial photo.
Lastly, did it burn up completely or fall into the ocean? Luckily it missed land but there might be a white pointer out there with a headache!

I'm afraid I can't correlate the pic with my own eyewitness report (as I don't have one!!!).
The FOV is 70mm on a 1.6x crop DSLR if that helps!?
The bottom of the pic as you've said, would be heading into the horizon. But the given the duration of exposure over this FOV - I wouldn't have expected any visible convergence/divergence!
Thanks for looking at the pics with a scientific eye though, I wondered if the crop of the trails I posted in the deep sky section might be open to some form of analysis.
Cheers
Doug

the way I saw it, the pic needs to be rotated 90*, it seemed to be going from the nth west, heading sth easterly. Dunno if that helps!

Shawn, did you read the thread or even check the date of the original post?
The burn-up in this thread happened two days before the one you have linked to.
