When buying astro gear I always look for the "clear sky" and "good seeing" options in the options list, but never seem to find them

I like your logic, give away stuff and the clouds will follow the goods
unfortunately for you it doesn't appear to be working

Your 16" Rob did you build it yourself because if you did then your exempt.
But it`s the add ons like the Argo-Navis that could attract attention.. ...cheers Kev.

Kev perhaps the cloud curse applies only to new gear. The original equipment owner has already 'paid the toll' for you.

A few years ago I sold an 8" dob.
I found it amusing that while the buyer was checking out the scope that the clouds prevented us from testing on anything other than distant street lights.
15 min after the proud new owner drove away with the scope, the clouds disappeared completely

Still ONLY JUST on topic - 2nd hand eqt
Maybe this is also a good opportunity to give IIS and Iceman its creator (um maybe just a big well-done for him) a big sloppy kiss for its ability to ease the way for a newbie (moi), looking to slide into observing without subjecting the budget to an event 8.0 on the Richter scale.
I have bought heaps of 2nd hand stuff here and never had a bad experience. Well done IIS members (oh dear, I am feeling especially maudlin now after a few Charders).
Cheers

Why would I be exempt still cost almost $4,500 for the bits. It's
been lovely and clear here for the last three months of building it. Now
it pretty well ready to be tested... and along come the clouds

Absolutely! Sold my 8" the other night. After setting up and explaining everything, we turned to the sky to show setting up finderscope and observing - clouds instantly rolled over and it started to rain!

10,000 times agreed! Almost everything (telescope-wise) I have is 2nd hand off IIS sales! I've saved so much money I'm only half broke now

My cable release arrived the other day.
Surprise surprise, clear skies!
In the time it took to align my mount, there was cloud from one horizon to the other. Ah well
Made up for it last night, I stayed up till after 2am and managed to nab some fab fotos.

I don't even have to buy anything.
All I have to do is start up Astroplanner and the clouds are automatically drawn the signal that the program obviously sends out.
Cheers

Typical Show weather Kev,
foul north winds, dust, pollen....the Royal Show is coming.
That dust can get in everywhere.
Make sure you have dust caps or whatever on all your OTAs and
eyepieces!
regards,
Steve B.
