Still, our language is alive and thus must evolve and change over time. I fear in twenty years we will be the ones with the language problem .
In 20 years ! I've got it now
Keep trying, but still can't seem work "like" into my conversations any more than once a day.
Jen, I think thats why I used to hate meetings. Everyone spoke in acronyms and abbreviations, and I've never been good at foreign languages.

ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHH HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH . It gives me the galloping trots . We have the SRC, SST, LTT, LAC, ABC, EFG .... Crikey I need a sheet with all the acronyms just so I know what anyone is saying. Its complete drivel. I even had to download a short dictionary to find out what half the shorthand meant on this site. Sigh, I must be getting old .

I'm from Texas in the USA where we are often accused of having our own dialect. ahahahaha. (Tho I transplanted to Florida a couple of years ago for work)
I look at internet forums as a big ole cyber room where we get to meet new folks and enjoy shared appreciations. You encourage communication by the very nature of it being a internet forum. I don't sweat the small stuff as long as I can get the gist of what's being said. You'll always have a ton of lurkers who might be just about ready to join in on the posts - and then they hesitate because their spelling skills are below par. I'd rather they jump in anyway rather than lose out on the possibility of another great friend.
Y'all use the word spelt whereas over here we say spelled. You add the u's into favorite and we've removed it for some reason....maybe to complete the break from Englands rule? lol. I don't even know.
Internet = communications. Might as well be friendly in the process, eh?
Howdy folks!

Hi Amy and to IIS.
I know this thread is a little dark but there is a lot of tongue in cheek humour as well. If you read many of the threads on this forum you will soon see not being able to spell has little impact on people posting and certainly adds to the flavour of the posts. UK English is very difficult to learn as there are so many conventions that constantly change adding to the confusion and on the whole I think most Aussie's couldn't care less (many of the rules I had drummed into me as a child no longer count and I still have trouble with "i"s and "e"s). Most of the odd spelling is a left over from hundreds of years ago when the language was spoken with a gutteral tone hence Knight or night rather than nite and so on. I agree that spelling should not be a barrier for people wanting to have a say but I also have memories of Sister Agnes cracking me over the knuckles with a ruler everytime I made a spelling mistake. You tend not to forget lessons like that .

Hi Amy, welcome to IIS
I'll be in Florida in about 6-7 weeks, spending a few days at Disneyworld, checking out the Kennedy Space Centre, and hoping that there won't be a hurricane so I can drive down to Key West!

Hello Marki, Jen and Kal....and everybody else...I've lurked for awhile.
I've got quite a few Aussie friends from another large internet forum on My Space....and was lucky enough to meet one very special fella. I co-moderate an Over 40 group that has over 36,000 members so I'm used to all the directions a thread can go. I quite enjoy that Aussie sense of humor and charm.
And Kal....I'm hoping no hurricanes either. lol. Actually, since I moved here from South Texas...there've been NO hurricanes affecting our weather. I think I've been a good luck charm.

Having said that I always thought "Lense" was spelt wrong.
Personally it dosen't matter to me either way because I spell other wrods worng ayawny.
on another note to IIS Amy.

Actually that is incorrect. The correct spelling is lens. Where the confusion enters is in the spelling of the plural which is "lenses". Sounds all wrong, bit like fishes instead of fish but thats how its spelt. Gotta love the english language....not. If nothing else this thread has highlighted the challenges facing children trying to learn the language. It's no wonder they just make it up to suit themselves .
