NEWS RELEASE: 2008-063 April 16, 2008

NASA Statement on Student Asteroid Calculations

PASADENA, Calif. -- The Near-Earth Object Program Office at NASA's Jet Propulsion
Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., has not changed its current estimates for the very low
probability (1 in 45,000) of an Earth impact by the asteroid Apophis in 2036.

Contrary to recent press reports, NASA offices involved in near-Earth object research
were not contacted and have had no correspondence with a young German student, who
claims the Apophis impact probability is far higher than the current estimate.

This student's conclusion reportedly is based on the possibility of a collision with an
artificial satellite during the asteroid's close approach in April 2029. However, the
asteroid will not pass near the main belt of geosynchronous satellites in 2029, and the
chance of a collision with a satellite is exceedingly remote.

Therefore, consideration of this satellite collision scenario does not affect the current
impact probability estimate for Apophis, which remains at 1 in 45,000.

NASA detects and tracks asteroids and comets passing close to Earth. The Near Earth
Object Observation Program, commonly called "Spaceguard," discovers, characterizes
and computes trajectories for these objects to determine if any could be potentially
hazardous to our planet.

I've cleaned up this thread. Please keep to the topic.

The "Astronomy Science" forum is for serious discussion. I know full well that everyone likes to have a bit of off-topic banter in threads, and that's fine in most other sub-forums on IceInSpace. Just not this one, please.

I'm sorry Mike, usually I respect you're decisions, but this one is not only "pretty sad" but has no justification whatsoever, even hiding behind some pre-ordained decision of yours notwithstanding!

Taking your own criteria exposes the hypochrisy of your stance in this particular situation, particularly given your extremely selective and autocratic editing, viz. your "clean up": there is nothing at all serious in the subject matter of this thread, to wit a "media beat-up" that falsely quotes both individuals and organizations with a completely absurd proposition!

I look forward to you showing courage as well as character to allow this particular post of mine to stand; also commenting that readers should know that there was nothing offensive or derogatory in my (deleted) posts, and that at least one reader found "hilarious." (that comment too was deleted!)

Being pleased about the growth and participation in this forum is mutually understandable: with such wide popularity comes the understanding/undertaking that THE APPLICATION OF ANY RULES are NOT THE ARBITRARY PROVINCE of a selected few, whatever their roles may be!

And heaven help anybody or any organization etc that decides a bit of light banter is only appropriate when and where "they" designate it - imagine the impact of this sort of directive ANYWHERE!

Since joining IIS my track record is, I believe, entirely defensible: I do like light banter as well as the introduction of topics/perspectives that any decent individual should have the opportunity to peruse - I would like to think that on many occassions I have gone to great lengths to assist people with their problems by actually taking the time and care to specifically answer their requests; often feeling disappointed that many who profess enormous expertise often seem unwilling to part with it in anything but thro-away three liners that do little to resolve the situations.

With respect, Darryl.

There are always shades of grey in the interpretation and application of the rules, Darryl.

It's not unacceptable to ask that friendly banter (even in a german accent) is kept mostly to the general chat forum.

Given the direction this story (the original topic) has taken, i'll also move this thread to the general chat forum.

Thank you for that Mike, there is nothing false in my respect of you for your response. I believe your application of "the grey scale" in this case to be an emminently appropriate and courageous one, showing great character, and I thank you for it wholeheartedly.

At the risk of pushing the envelope too far - and I would understand any response of yours to this particular request: as this is now a "General" thread topic, could Screwdriverone's reply to my post to him, and my subsequent reply, be re-inserted? I am sure he would get a real laugh and fillip at my turning his comment about bratwurst into a reflection of his reactions re his barlowed newt scope problems!

ps - my father is German-Irish, Pfitzner and O'Loughlin, I thought I'd leave out the mongrelised G-I lingo we grew up with, and just respond to Screwie in (extremely, extremely) bad mock-German!

Cheers, Darryl.

Considering the subject line of the thread "We're all gonna die!" and the content of the story from a supposed 13yr old German genius who it now, as it turns out has been "debunked" by NASA and the whole thing shown to be a complete SHAM, I still think that the comments that I made about the "science" of the claim in the first place, and the whole subsequent flavour of the thread is entirely appropriate for what was being discussed, with the possible exception of the low level profanity that I included in my posts that was subsequently filtered anyway by the forum. For that I apologise...

I did however read the story that NASA posted from Ron's entry and it seems now that my original theories on this whole story are entirely backed up by the subsequent "debunking" of the original schoolboy's claims!!! , apart from the bit about the reporter's motives which was pretty funny anyway, in my humble opinion.

I will endeavour to keep the humour to a minimum, depending on the location of the thread in question, but if Darryl gets involved in the discussions, I can't promise anything. We may have gotten a bit carried away with the sidebar, but it certainly wasnt "rubbish" in a topic that was started as "We're all gonna die!"

My current theory is that if I cant find something to laugh at, life gets pretty depressing and Darryl (Kokatha Man), his experience, assistance and outstanding willingness to help as well as his whacky sense of humour, along with IIS in general are just some of the things that make life bearable again.

Hi,

The human race, homo sapiens has only been here a few hundred thousand years. Major killer asteroids average one or two every 10 or twenty million years. The odds on one intersecting Earth in the next 1000 years by which time we will be able to deal with them are quite low.

So as far as a major asteroid impact is concerned, I reckon no-one will die, ever, as we will be big enough boys to take care of ourselves.
