our dog escaped a few months ago, and after 9 years of behaving himself decided that it was his new "thing" to get under the fence and disappear.
the first time we thought kids had let him out, and did nothing. after he escaped the second time i went out the back and called him and he showed his hand by pushing under the gate to come out and be with me. so after that:
* boarded up fence with wood - he ripped it apart
* huge 3mm perspex sheet (seemed pretty strong and smooth) - destroyed
* milk crates full of bricks in front of fence - climbed up and jumped over fence
* sheet metal - terrified. sounds like thunder when you bang the gate he wouldn't go near it. problem solved?
* a week later he destroyed the OTHER gate (thick wood) in about 10-15 mins of the house being empty.
* replaced other gate with new metal gate - dog gets over his fear of the back gate and climbs over it. leaves blood all over gate after cutting himself
We THINK we've solved it for now, by extending the back gate higher with extra fencing material. Even still, when we get a storm he walks up to it and tries to climb up and over. He used to go behind the house but for some reason he's decided hiding there isn't as good as escaping. of course, every time he gets out we get a call - and half the time he's been dodging traffic on the main road (6 lanes), or has crossed the road and kept going. it's amazing he hasn't been hit.
