Cripes, Scott, I feel for you, old son. Like others on this site I've been there, done that (but declined the T-shirt).
I will be thinking of you and Cam and hoping like mad that the good staff at Westmead work out things for him. Please remember in those moments of despondency that there are people around, even though you don't know them, who care.

Thanks to all of you for your kind wishes, thoughts and prayers.
Campbell is showing signs of improvement but is not out of the woods yet. We had a bit of a set back late Thursday night when he had a severe seizure.
He is now on additional medication and does not apear to have suffered any additional damage from this episode.
The swelling on his brain seems to be going down and as each day passes he gains function and we can now regularly see the Campbell that we know and love. I suspect that he will be in the hospital another 1-2 weeks but this depends completely on how fast the swelling subsides.
Again, thanks to all for you positive vibes.
Sincerely,
Scott

I was talking with Scott Mitchell on the phone today and just wanted to post an update on Campbell and wish him all the best.
He has viral encephalitis. He has been in Westmead Childrens' hospital for the past 2 weeks and will be there for another week while he completes his intravenous anti viral medication. At the moment signs are good that he will make a complete recovery.
We all wish him well and look forward to seeing him back out stargazing soon.
Cheers,
John B

Wow how terrible for you and your family, Scott. I'm sorry I missed this thread the first time around - I was away from the internet for 4 days when this was first posted.
My thoughts are with you and your family - I just can't imagine the feelings and emotional rollercoaster you have been through. We've had some scary times with our 3 kids, but we've been fortunate enough so far to have nothing quite so serious as this.
I will continue to hope Campbell has a full recovery and look forward to his smiling face at a star party soon.
I bet you're glad you were at home at the time and not overseas for work!

Thanks again to all who have posted and expressed concern.
As John noted, Campbell is improving but has another week or so to go in the hospital. He was able to attend the "hospital" school today and this was the longest he has been out of bed and functioning since his admittance. He is still physically a bit weak but he has regained his spirit and sense of humour.
He is looking forward to attending SPSP...and winning a door prize (his comment not mine)!
My wife and I are alternating nights at the hospital...it has been draining in so many different ways I can not begin to describe the ups and downs we have been through over the last few weeks.
I have told him about all of the replys and well wishers that have been posted here in the forum...it cheered him a lot.
While not home yet, we are at least starting to talk about it with the doctors...maybe as soon as Sunday!?!
Thanks All!

Thanks for the update, Scott. Sounds like things are improving. Hopefully you can start breathing easily soon.
How's his younger brother coping? I bet he misses his big brother!
