Thanks for your excellent pdf article Andrew, there is a lot of work in it.
Lacaille's position was 1.1 arcmin, Dunlop's best position (in his notes) was 5.8 arcmin and John Herschel's position was 19.1 arcmin from the mag 6.5 star Hip 51866 which is near the middle of NGC 3293.
