What fantastic reasoning ability you have Karl. Maybe you remember this guy from History. Went by the name of Hitler. Killed 1/3rd of the worlds Jewish population. I guess they just weren't smart enough to survive right? We do not hold dominion over this world. It is not here for us to exploit as we see fit. Tell you what though....you go ahead and eat all the whale meat you like. 1kg of it has enough mercury in it to kill you.

You have clearly stated that you think the whale will die out due to its lacking intelligence. About 50% of humans are below median intelligence - should they too be culled by the rest of us who are obviously smarter??

You should think longer about statements you make before you type them.

I think if the whales die out - it will be because of human greed and aggression, not because they weren't "smart enough".

Do we deserve it??

I'd just love to see a 6 metre long orca leap from the water and grab one of these Japanese from their boat as they slaughter the whales in the nets.... who'd be smarter then???

Yes I remember Hitler and Stalin. Beside Jewish people, National Socialist party and Communist party were responsible for death of tens millions people, not only Jewish. And both of those political paries had one thing in common. They were Fanatics, never accepting alternate view.
I must add that I’m not German or Jewish. But I got great admiration for Jewish people, not that they survived holocaust, they dominant force in Western word today.
I simply added my thoughts on this tread without attacking anybody’s right to have different view. After few responses I can see that fanaticisms and intolerance is well and alive.
As for whale, I have seen many while sailing and have to avoid collision with them often. I have spent lot of time in the Australian bush and forests of Europe. And learn a lot about animal behaviour. And I see Whale as pretty dumb animal. Almost any animal that hunted (by men or other predator) will learn very quickly to avoid hunters. Whale doesn’t seem have this survival instinct.

some human beings think that we have a right to treat the other species on this planet in any way we please, how wrong.
if we have evolved at all we should by now realise how precious and fragile the animal kingdom has become because of the indifference of a few driven by greed.
l personally support the fight against poaching and exploitation of elephants, financially and in other ways as this is my particular love, but the slaughter of any intelligent creature makes me sick.
to the people who support this practice imagine for a minute being at the mercy of someone who thinks they are better than you and you have no right to live.

I have did not imply that any animal got no right to exist. There are many animals’ species we try to eliminate and despite of that they thrive. As part of evolutionary process some species will survive and some not. Some people like to eat whale meat; they got same right to it as we got right to slaughter lamb and cattle.

Ric. Get a grip. Humans are hunters and gatherers. We kill animals. Other animals kill animals. There is no Bill of Rights for animals. Hey - there is barely one for humans, either. We have created a society that condones murder. Sometimes.

Enviable Dennis, but I don't like your chances of persuading the rest of humanity to follow your lead.

Hi Will

No need for envy; I assume you are as content with your lot, as I am with mine?

I was more concerned that my wife and I were being grouped in with all of humanity, getting tagged with a label that clearly does not fit, as we do not appear meet the pre-conditions laid down.

It’s also a full time job developing myself, so I’m a little shy of changing others!

Regards

Dennis

A good article here.
http://goaustralia.about.com/od/anim.../a/migaloo.htm

Also, a news item stated that the japs are going to target Migaloo, as his flesh would fetch 10 times the going price.
I think that Rudd might wave a feather at the japs, rather than send a warship to defend the whales in the southern seas, due to the huge trade pacts.

Ok guys settle it down and don't get personal. IceInSpace isn't the place to try and convince people of your own political, ethical or religious values.

As a general thought I say...Things just are...neither good or bad..it is our personal qualifiction that makes something good or bad... when you hold this thought all things are bearable...but from seeing things this way it allows us to see the good in things or the bad in things..by our qualification...
I think what causes our frustration with others views is our inability to change them to our own... well there is no need for that frustration... if your view is made known you have done your bit.. there is no need for frustration that the world does not immediately change course to match the one you have set it....
So relax and look for new facts you may not be aware of when you engaged in the discussion ..

The spider has been on the planet for 20 million years so I believe... compared to our short time should we not respect it.

I have little doubt that we could as a species continue without the need to eat whale meat... we could be God like and let them live.. notwithstanding our overwhealming greater right to exist perhaps.

I wonder if every adult could sit down and view {and endure} the vision and message that this documentry contains whether attitudes would change in the way we treat our follow beings on this planet.

Ghandhi was a very wise man.

As a species co-habitating this planet there is still a great amount we have to learn about existing in harmony with nature and other species, I believe our own survival depends upon it.
