Did come close one day in Cue, WA. Was drinking at the bar and got into conversation with another Scot. Introduced myself, Bill Coventry. He cracked up laughing, his name is Phil Birmingham.

How the heck could you, with an 0 in it?

I'm one of the 31099 Whites. The origin of the name is in Olde England, and comes from a time then when people did not have legal family names as we do, but were known by their given name and either locality, eg "Geoffrey of Wight", or by their occupation, eg "Geoffrey the White Limer" or their appearance "Geoffrey the White (fair and extremely handsome complexion)"

Myself, I am descended directly from the Whyte Harts, a family known for their bravery, morality, loyalty, and purity. The ancestral seat is the White Hart Inn, Lydgate, Manchester, UK. I returned there in triumph in 2005, but they had forgotten us altogether, the peasants, serfs, draggy-drawers.

Cheers

862 Bayley's.

There's a few of us, but not enough to be common folk. lol
I know only my immediate family, but I had 6 uncles once upon a time - their offspring would no doubt take up some of those 862.

Thanks for link ving.

I know of Rodger Davis the golfer, Roger Davis the real estate agent, Roger Davis the cricketer, Roger Davis the actor (Alias Smith and Jones) and there is actually a Professor of Astronomy in the USA named Roger Davis. He and I MUST be related!

Anyone else understand this data?

The total people with the 20 most common surnames is 766,845, only some 3.8% of our 20 million population?? That cannot be right.

My surname is relatively common, but the result is only 1,798 people?

I'm guessing this data is only a sampling. The Brisbane phone book alone lists as many Fehrs than that site has.

OK, IP Australia has this to say about that search:

"This is a search of surnames supplied by the Australian Electoral Office. It gives an indication of whether a trade mark is a common surname (and so not capable of distinguishing under the Trade Marks Act 1995). Note: common = 500 or more occurrences."

I'm guessing that means it is a list of registered voters. You're all registered to vote, right? :p

edit: There are actually 21 white pages listings for my surname in Australia. This search returns 29, so it is fairly safe to say it is a list of registered voters.

OK, after a bit of searching, I noticed that the database is wildcard searchable.

There are a total of 12 546 638 people indexed.
