I cant believe Phil Plait the Bad Astronomer came up with a theory like that, a scud missile I thought he was only into debunking wild conspiracies, or maybe the metor story is is being used as a cover for the truth, it was a scud missile as they have found oil there

scientists announced it was a rare kind of meteorite, I would love to know what type it was and where it came from.

I reckon Nightstalker will know how to deal with them, I remember an episode where he had to pour salt into their mouths and sew up their lips.

the newest news:

http://space.newscientist.com/article/dn12704-report-clarifies-some--but-not-all--details-of-peru-impact.html

but:

The size of the object that hit also remains unclear – estimates range from the size of a basketball to a few metres across.

Looks like it was a meteorite - see Spaceweather 9 Oct 2007 - includes a PDF of the initial report from Prof. Peter Brown of the University of Western Ontario.
