Malmsteen the 16" collects nearly 80% more light, compared to a 12", and so it is better for visual observing. The 12" SCT with a drive would be better for imaging. You also need to look at weight, cost etc. How far can you see? Here is a sample.

basically aperture size relates to amount of light collected. bigger is better!
F ratio determines your field view with a given eyepiece
I hope i haven't confused you.

You can see further with the 16" but the 12" f/12 is good for looking at planets and double stars. However if you want something portable go for a 10" f/5 Dobsonian.

No mention of the 16" GSO on the 'Andrew's Communications' website.

It has however been mentioned in their magazine adds over the last couple of months. Perhaps Lee is waiting until he has some actual images, etc, before he puts too much on the website.

We've been hearing about these scopes for 2 years now I think, and even when the 16" Lightbridges were finally announced and orders taken it still took a little while for stock to arrive. When GSO's own 16" version finally arrives I'm sure Lee will have all the blurb available for us.

Andrews has a sketch of the new 16" in the shop. In the picture it's a truss tube, not solid tube. Unlike the Lightbridges, it has three struts, each of which are basically steel tripod legs.

That's interesting because ages ago the scuttleutt was all about GSO's own version being a truss tube dob exactly as you described, and speculation about how rigid that kind of construction would be.

Somewhere along the way then the talk changed and a solid tube OTA was being mooted, possibly this confusion was helped by the stand-in image on GSO's website.

Must say I'm more than a little interested to see how this unit looks and performs.

After looking a 16" lightbridge up and down, I can only conclude that a rigid 16" OTA is going to be a relative monster, not something to carry on the back seat of the car?
