A question re RB-Andrew's impressive welding photo which we might have to move elsewhere? Can something as bright as a welding arc damage a CCD or CMOS chip? It's the blue "patches" that made me wonder cause I wasn't sure what they were caused by. I guess if the Sun can be photographed, no, but I wondered?

I did exhaustive search on the net beforehand and the consensus was that it doesn't hurt it.
What I'll do is check my camera from last night and see if it still works ok and get back to you later.

Thanks Andrew. I know it's a long time ago, but I remember Apollo XII crew having damaged a video camera (obviously well before CCDs etc.)

Here's a report:-

"After Conrad had collected the contingency sample Bean joined him on the surface, bringing the television camera with him. A few minutes later, Houston reported that the camera was not working. Cursory attempts at troubleshooting (including hitting it with a hammer) were fruitless, and television coverage for the mission - desirable but not essential - had to be written off. Later examination determined that the image-tube target in the camera had been damaged by exposure to intense light. Apparently Bean had inadvertently pointed the camera at the sun or a reflection off the lunar module while helping Conrad set up a directional antenna."

And here's a great story of video communications from Apollo. Fascinating:-

OK, I'll get out of this thread now.

Just FYI we have a number of CCTV cameras around the factory, and the UV from welding does damage the sensors, so we go to great pains to cover them when welding. But I suspect the occasional short exposure is not going to be too much problem... several minutes might be!

Thanks Andrew, the sunnies weren't as reflective as I would have liked, but they had to do.
