Thanks for the tip Greg.

Well I took the little red car into Tabby to order the pipe as I saw some at the back of the Rural Agents, they told me it was a special order so today when I pulled in and I asked if they knew if the guy might have some off cuts...now me being dead lucky this happens...the Rural agent said he did not know but to ask the guy who ordered it..that is him pulling in now..I always was good at timing...so I told him my story and he said he can probably help but to see him next week as he is working at the oval putting in pipes...so we shall see...
Then the assistant rings and says he will be available end of next week...

So hopefully he can help me out...I don't mind buying it but you must buy it in 6 mt lengths and I need only 1.8 mt and I have no current use for the left overs.

The guys name is Greg.

Alex

Totally agree on the comparison.
I was going to mount my EQ8 on a custom pier but when I saw it decided to just permanently set it up in my dome. Also planned a dynabolt hold down and disregarded it.

50 bags of concrete gave me a round base for the legs to sit on 1m down into the ground and 300mm up. EQ8 mounts sits on it like it is part of the planet.

Didn't think of doing 3 smaller bases!

The little foot-cups made it so easy to level, as well. A great mount.

Special THANKS to Bojan as the saw that he suggested has done the first hole.
But ot wasnt perfect as I deviated by quarter of an inch but it turned out a lucky mistake as I missed a nail...
It is only 9 am and I feel very tired so I dont know of I can do any more today.
But I headed off the pain by thinking ahead...I stopped taking the Morphine some time back but as I had some tablets left I had one at 6 am so the pain in me feet qnd legs would not stop me...but I still had pain but got one hole done at least.
The saw went quiet good but difficult to work out where you are...I added some tape to help .,Being patient was the key , thanks who told me, ...anyways I will take a rest by going and see if this guy can come good with some pipe....So chip chip chip mountains fall.

Good to know it all worked out for you mate, one way or the other. Take it easy, rest up, and attack the next stage when you can.
Looking forward to seeing the finished product!

Hi Warren thanks for your kind and encouraging words.

Happily my assistant took pity on me and is dropping working on his sisters electrical system to help me so he will be here at 8-30 am to drill the other two holes, help move the rig out of the way, dig the hole for the slab, drive in the star pickets and lay the form work...I would have done it all but I have a doctor's appointment.just a follow up on how the radiation treatment went.. nothing important..I still haven't got the pipes but he said he may have some some so I hope so...this job should have been finished yesterday except for the pipe form work which I could have substituted ply form work...I think the morphine caused me to get so tired as I cant think of any other reason...maybe as I have not taken it for a couple of months..I just wanted not to get taken out by the pain but ironically the morphine took me out I guess...I ended up sleeping most of the day I think.

Looks like a beast of saw Alex, I wouldn't feel to bad about it running away from you on the first try.

The foot around the blade looks like it would allow you to follow a template fairly easily. Might be an idea later to make a template circle to tac into place and just run the jigsaw around it.

That is a brilliant suggestion ...hmmmm...but how do you make the template as you would use that saw to make it and run into the same problem...I will have to think about that...the assistant does have a great deal of experience with these types of saws so I am hoping he can manage...

I know you could use the disk that I cut out..grind back the divergence and nail it to some ply and cut around that and use that to make the template.

Thanks for you great suggestion.
Alex

So a great day... three holes drilled, one with star pickets in place, made it to doctors on time and they are surprised the treatment went so well and I dont need any more...the lump has gone completely....well I knew it would...anyways priced some box Steel to replace what is there and add better wheels...buying a replacement makes the job easier as one can come out and the new one go in...anyways I left there and thought I saw some suitable pipe at the back of a shed place..I called in..what I saw from yhe road were roller doors but the guy showed me some steel pipe 2 m
by 200 mm and 4 mm wall thickness and I bought it and had them cut it into three sections which just happened to be the size I want...very happy..but then I see he has two sections of the box steel I want... And he was saving me $70 on the earlier price plus I convinced him that delivering it was a good idea...free if I wait till they go by or $250 for a special trip...I dont care and just want it when I am ready to work on it if that means dropping $250 no worries for me it is about time not money these days..I said I am lucky so you will get a job out my way to build a shed in the next three days..so you deliver free ok...yes..then he sits me down at a table and brings over a rather attractive lady to get my details...which she did..I paid dome money and we walk to the door and she asks about my astronomy photos as she heard what I wanted the materials for...so I show her...then she says..I do night photography just the Milly Way, metor showers, Northern lights...nothing like you do..I said widefield Milky Way is my favorite thing.. so nice to meet someone interested and doing our hobby...

It is 150mm x 50mm and 4mm ( although the quote on the first lot they said 3 mm ) but now the hunt for wheels...The lengths are 8 mtrs but that is ok as I will extend them way past the roof the place the anchor points such that I can get the roof all the way off and get a little more of the Northern sky.

I am so happy that things are moving along nicely but I may have to pay the money and get the runners delivered ...mmm I better get to Bunnings and buy the wheels on Monday

Alex

Very handy tool, you could just make yours to size and use any cutting bit available.

Option 2:

Option two is a must for anyone who wants an easy circle cutter imo.

Steve

Option 1 = too much time when you can buy a professionally made one out of high speed steel for < $30. It's called an adjustable fly cutter. I have had one that cuts up to 300mm holes for 30 years. You need a decent drill to use it. I either use it on my 3/4hp drill press, or with my 1100 watt corded drill. You can use it with a high quality 18v+ cordless, but it's a lot slower.

Option 2 is called a tremel. Works better with a router than a jigsaw. A router with a st8 cut bit gives a much nicer finish and edge than a jigsaw. Paricularly on plywood which can micro chip with a jigsaw. Had one of those for a lot of years also. You need one to build a telescope. To cut the ground board, the rings for the upper cage assembly and also the side bearings if you make those out of plywood.

Cheers

It has come up really well Alex. You did a nice job on those holes with the reciprocating saw. I use mine for everything from pruning the garden to cutting steel, with fibreglass, composites and aluminium in between. Bunnings amd other tool shops sell some multi purpose blade packs which turn it into a very versatile tool.

Cheers

Thank you Warren and John.
I have just now worked out how to move the roof in and out without changing the cable anchor point a couple of times each way ...important as next step is to control the roof from my van.
I think I can do without the new runners that I ordered so I am going to see I they will let me out of the sale and see my new astro friend and see if she would like to capture Andromeda plus buy a double garage for the car and me...how they treat me will tell if they get any new business..I would buy a garage in a heart beat but dealing with council puts me off..I will see if they will do that then great..

I gave them a $150 deposit so even if I drop that no worries.as hard as that is to take I won't have to pay the balance or sort out delivery..I should not have been so hasty ..I am going to just replace the wheels that are there with decent ones and I can't see that not working.. I have worked out I only need to Jack the roof a couple of mm and remove and replace wheels by rolling them on the inside..changes everything...
I can't do the winch fix today as I have no petrol for my genny ...so I am going to take a nap in case it is clear tonight..the inverter spat the dummy so I imaged using the genny last night and used all my petrol...

So I decided not to replace the runners and got my deposit back.
I have ordered new wheels which I hope will do the job.

However the big news is today the RASA was moved to sit on the new piers so what started as a mere enquire a to hole to drill a big hole has a very happy ending.

I will post a photo later.
