The selling fees are quite horrendous on ebay i.e. recently sold a camera lens for $2500 plus $25 postage. The fees were a flat 13.4% of the selling price plus postage so 13.4% of $2525 was $338.35. Out of the $2525 I was paid $2161.65, received the money in my bank account within a couple of days. Of course there were few times when I got a lot more for an item than I was expecting, like all auctions there are good and bad days, luck of the game.
You have to wonder if I could have got $2500 for my camera lens on Gumtree, Trading Post, local paper or even IIS.

I find Ice Trade Classified very good.
Also Face Book Marketplace.
Sold and bought real quick on both.
Definitely no more Ebay for me.
Gave them my resignation today.
Gave PayPal the flick a while ago.
I was concerned with their security,
which they didn't seem to have the
same concern.
Cheers

If you don't sell on eBay folks, then this is nothing to worry about. Keep on buying as you did before.
If you sell, it is disheartening somewhat. And indeed, eBay's fees are crazy - after they took their fees from a CCD cam I sold, I LOST $178 compared to what I bought it for.

If you list through Gumtree Steve then list on ebay through the Gumtree app and as long as you sell no more than 2 items a month you get charged a flat 30 cent rate just sold a $800 camera and that's all it cost me.

It doesn't look like a scam to me. I've had eBay messages about payment admin that don't address me by name - they were legit. Plus, the screenshot is taken from within eBay's My Messages page (it's not a separate e-mail). It's addressed at the top, in blue, to "carriergroup".

Never sold anything on ebay so this doesn't affect me, but I did set up an account for buying crypto the other day but to complete the account setup it had similar requirements - colour scans of license etc front and back, and I was like "Naaaah, ain't gonna happen" so no crypto

I've sold one item on facebook market place, way too many tyrekickers on it and lots of scammers. I make it clear in my sale ads "genuine inquiries only I have no patience for tyre kickers and time wasters".

I think the internet has bred a whole new generation of purveyors of fake
merchandise, especially collectibles, gemstones and jewellery in general.
So many fake antique porcelain figurines are listed as genuine, that it has
drastically reduced the prices realised by genuine pieces. The same goes for gemstones, with created and/or heat treated stones listed as natural stones.

You're right - I can't believe the fees are so high -
I would have guessed 1% at most.
https://www.ebay.com.au/help/selling...-store?id=4822
Variable fee – most categories 13.4% of the sale amount up to $4,000
(including postage and handling), calculated per item
2.5% of the sale amount over $4,000

Ebay's fees are quite reasonable. Have a look at the fees of many auction houses, particularly art; often much higher than ebay's.

I am inclined to agree Raymo.
Ebay offers a window to a huge market place and a support structure and they deserve to be paid a decent return for the huge investment that is Ebay.
I really think the folk who are grizzle grizzle grizzle cause they are expected to pay fees that really are not unreasonable given the small "price" of the item are not really the thinking it thru and remembering times where you had to take out a printed add in a city newspaper that reached a very small market. and only got an add that for practical purposes lasted little past 24 hours.
They could ask 25% on small items and that not be unreasonable...AND Lewis if you lost money it is not Ebay's fault but indeed yours.
