ok i think everyone has gotten all excited about the PC and forgot about ken!

Ken, what do you want to use on the computer and what do you want to be able to do?

do you want to use photographic programs such as photoshop to edit photos, or are you just going to be viewing stuff?

are all you going to be doing is using the web, and looking at stuff on the web?

are you going to be playing games?

If you after a 'web machine' only, and all your going to be doing is looking at stuff on the internet, then the 256MB will be fine with windows 98. XP does like 512MB RAM but it can survive on 256MB RAM.

now the modem.... is the modem on your old machine an external modem (ie is it a small box outside of the computer you put your phone line into), or do you plug your phone line into the back of the computer? If it is an internal modem (plug into the back of the computer) then you will have to ask if the guys in the shop can add that from your old machine into your new one.

are you confused yet?

Huh? I don't get it David!

Rowena, internal modem.

I am contacting guys in Buninyong (near Ballarat) to see if they can upgrade my PC.

UPDATE

The Bloke out past Buninyong (about 1 hour away) has solved my PC problems.

HOORAY!!!!

It was exactly as Phil (acropolite) PM'd me about.

The little fan on the heat-sink has a stuffed bearing, hence the terrible noise and the over-heating. Also the heat-sink was crammed full of dust. I get the new fan tomorrow.

Total cost of repair - $15

To think that I have put up with this PC crashing every 10-15 minutes for months all for the sake of a $15 fan and dust. Amazing.

I am still going to get a better computer but now I can save for a few months to get one.

Thank you to everyone who tried to help. I certainly learnt a lot along the way.

Hey, Hey. Pooter back on with new fan.

The Heat-sink is twice the size of the old one and the fan about 20% bigger. And it is so Quiet!

Hey Tony, this fan has heaps of Ram!!!
