Paul, you don't need a modded camera for this galaxy unless you have a big scope that can resolve some of its nebulous areas. If you're getting noise at 800 iso don't bother cranking it up to 1600 or 3200, it will definitely be worse. I'm not sure where you were shooting from but the 550d certainly struggles to tame noise in the warmer weather. I was able to get away with 1600 and 3200 iso because it was about 5° C ambient while I was shooting it. For 47 Tuc it had dropped to about 3° C. Sunday night was pretty cold down here. The 550d sensor hates getting warm. Perhaps my 40 second subs kept it cooler too. How fast is your scope? 2mins @ 800iso should give you decent detail and brightness in your subs at around f 5 but you definitely need more than the 10 you took. I did 33mins on it and that wasn't enough but 50 subs did help with the noise.
