I've been with Virgin mobile WiFi for over 5 years. Don't know the speed but usually 1gb downloads in 10-15 minutes.

Because of these issues being reported, I think I'll stay with mobile broadband.

Thanks Paul , not sure what I am on just the good old 25mbs plan ,,, how do I find out ? ,,
,, yes " Warm and brown stuff " for sure .

Anyway when I got home just now I turned my wifi hub off and rebooted again ( 50th time in 3 weeks ) and I am now on 17.6 up and 4.5 down which is ok and its 4pm here , peak ?
yea I think so but it will slowly die off until the SOS starts its cycle again and I know it will be back to 5-8mbs by 6pm ,,, 1-2mbs by 7pm and so on .
rubbish .

But the Tech will be here tomorrow and he IS !!!
going to earn his saturday wage tomorrow .

Brian.

Both have issues with congestion due to the service providers not buying enough bandwidth from NBN and/or skimping on backhaul from the NBN to their own networks. Telstra is not exactly known for buying loads of NBN capacity either. Backhaul or CVC congestion usually shows up in peak time slowdowns.

Added to that, if you are on FTTN there is the added layer of something warm and brown that comes from recycling a practically moribund network the basis of which originates 50 years before the internet and trying to make it serve! In NBN land it is known as NodeLotto. To a smaller extent that applies to HFC as well.

Your speed and stability suggests FTTN?

So when things get busy customers get a big drop in speed.

We don't get it till next year and haven't needed it yet but I like watching movies and all our local video shops have closed so it seems streaming will be the most convenient or only way. I've spent a good chunk of my money on my home theatre so need faster internet to stream full def sound and picture.
Both of those sound like exactly what I was talking about.

75BC, the term you are looking for is CVC, which is "Connectivity virtual circuit" if FTTN is big Mal's legacy, CVC is the ALP's. It is a stupid way to build in costs to pay for the NBN as it is expensive (It effectively is a bandwidth charge) and the cost discourages providers from buying enough. When your provider hits the CVC they have bought at the POI you are connected to, all of their customers on that POI choke for data. The same happens when they don't have enough backhaul Which the damn stupid (In this instance) ACCC forced them to buy or build to 121 geographically separated locations rather than the 14 that the original NBN design called for if they want to be a national provider.

I am with Aussie Broadband, who are rapidly gaining a reputation of being one of the best providers, if not particularly among the cheapest. Unfortunately I am on a congested fixed wireless tower and there is not a thing they can do about that. It is a bit like node lotto, except in this case it is a matter of what kind of success ballast your tower is groaning under. We get up to about 45/15 on a 50/20 plan in low times and single digits each way in peak times and no end in sight.

Good old NodeLotto. At work I won, but at home, I'm a long way off.

My RSP changed their backhaul provider, because there were a lot of the problems you are describing, Brian. Since then, those problems have vanished. I have set up 4 connections using them, and all report stable speeds and connections. I think your problem starts with a capital 'T'!

And officially we are behind Kenya in terms of internet speeds now. Currently 50th on the world rankings... see how low we will go before things start getting better.
