On a _really_ good night (do we get those?!), with a very stable atmosphere, longer exposures would be fine, but I'm not finding those rushing to come along

There's no silver bullet to finding the sweet spot with your setup, it's just experimentation, but hopefully you've got some new settings to try and see what you think...and that's the important thing...be happy, keep plugging away until you've nailed your capture technique and wait for a good night...you'll be rewarded when one chooses to come along

Yeah the bit depth is a bit of a rabbit hole, but essentially when you stack a large number of frames you claw back the numerical precision you lose by capturing in 8-bit (which we do for speed).
Indeed & appreciate your further input' Dunk, and it is 'hitting home' (Seeing)
Ive mentioned in another my recent Juup post's - Seeing flat out getting above 5/10 most nights. 6/10 & 7/10's are rare enough, once a few months, but above that are as you mention, "not running to greet us", Lol )
I remember back in the late 80's when I ground/polished my 1st 8" F9.4 mirror, and thought I had (Flunked Badly) Lol, Planets were not showing up like a had expected - Jup was only showing the two main EQ Bands untill about 9 months later - One night Juup just looked real sweet in the sky, Lugged the cumbersome polytube scope out and (BLIMEY) I swear I saw as many as 8 or 9 belts there that night, very sharp, very fine lines from top to bottom I was jumping for Joy for Days Lol & havent seen a night here as good since, maybe a couple were close, but nothing like that

Cheers Dunk, and Yes, starting to realise how important it really is, ,
Here I get very good transparency half the time, but seeing, stabilization are virtually non-existent
I always check out the weather conditions - jet steam, wind speeds through all the layers, (heights); Vapour charts & humidity temps dew points etc and I wont astro unless half of them are above average..

I will try ( from your comment ) which makes very good sense, Good Seeing - not so good transparency I have thought it would be a waste of time, but, I haven't tried those conditions with Planetary yet
Thanx much for this input I am a wee bit excited to give that a Go
Cheers & Rgrds ...

Appreciate your comment Domenic
Confirmation on situations are a big help mate I sometimes think this scope is a lemon tho now suspecting where I am, just doesnt have very good 'Seeing' most times,, but I need to remember that if a night is very good, I need to put them barlows on
Cheers
