In that contract is a clause allowing AGL to restrict supply when required due to grid pressures. The Labour MP acknowledged this under questioning by ABC.
This is not the first time this has happened, there have been at least two other instances where AGL restricted supply to Tomago Aluminium, that passed by without incident or comment.
Clearly this is being "played" by the Tomago Auminium CEO and the local Labour MP for their own purposes.
Interestingly, VISY Paper Mill in Tumut was also restricted and we have heard no such posturing by them.
Everyone seems to be trying to politicise the energy debate for their own purposes - surprise, surprise.

Given the below I think you can point that finger at the minister for coal fired just as well. Particularly in light that what was required to have Engie lay on more capacity from Pelican point was for AEMO to direct them to do so.

Asking them to do it is irrelevant, an "Urgent plea" equally so. They are a free market agent and decided under that free market not to supply power. A direction from AEMO is the only thing relevant here.

I do note how often the liberals break with their "Free market" mantra when it suits them.

Energy minister Josh Frydenberg also asked the Australian Energy Regulator to investigate French company Engie for failing to respond to an urgent plea for more generation in South Australia on Wednesday as that state faced blackouts.
I can tell you straight from the mouth of someone who worked at a privatised generator near Melbourne, they wholly and solely worked on the basis of the spot price. When it went above a certain threshold they went online, when it went below another they went off again. If we as a nation don't like that idea then about the only real option is to re nationalise it. Regulating that outside of exceptional circumstances they have to come online when they do not consider it commercially viable won't work either as they will simply demand a price rise to ensure that was what previously not commercially viable (Or attractive) becomes so, or they will shut down and leave.

AGL is shutting down the Tomago Aluminium Smelter again today at 4pm. Don't feel sorry for Tomago Alu, they get a substantial discount on what they pay for power from AGL in exchange for the possibily of supply outages, and this has been the case since 1991.
