Col, you got off lightly!

I had a teacher in grade 4 who wanted every kid in the class to know their tables... Two lines met in the middle of the class each morning, first thing; one hand extended..., but not the writing hand. He called out the table and if you got the answer first, you sat down. The other kid got a whack on the hand from a 1m cane. If you got the answer wrong, two whacks!, and I am talking serious velocity behind it.

I can still beat anyone under the age of 50, even when they are armed with a calculator....

Am I bitter, angry, twisted, traumatised, abusive, after compo... ? HELL NO! Best teacher I ever had... and guess what I do for a job.

I was unlucky enough to have the Principal for a teacher in an all boys State School in the 1960s.

I was canned far more that year than in all my other years of school. His new idea just before my family was transferred to Cairns was to mark in his notebook if U deserved the cane, and when U deserved 6, he would give them to U all at once. I was at 4 after 2 months, and then we left. Phew!

One boy (aged 10) waged school and was found by his father who then dragged the boy to school. The boy legs were red and had welts from the beating his father gave him. The principal felt sorry for him and only gave him 4 cuts since his father had already punished him.

The Government combined the boys and girls schools just before I left and the Principal gave the speech to the girls that he could cane them just like the boys to the age of 12.

I heard shortly afterwards that he was dismissed for excess cruelty to children. The good old country-boys in those days did not mind their boys being flogged, but not their little princesses.

In european schools, we just got marks (1-5), no punishment.
