I 100% agree.
At least if the electronic entertainment is in community area there is a chance of building communication bridges with your young and adolescent children. Locked away in their rooms with electronic babysitters, there is little chance.
As for study, my firm belief is an area in the house should be setup for general study for everyone, not just for the children. Preferably somewhere quiet and away from through traffic. Bedrooms are not ideal as there is no opportunity for the kids to ask spontaneous questions about the work they are doing. Dining room is good, especially if it is semi-open plan with the kitchen. That area then becomes a "quiet zone". There are lots of benefits. Not least for the children. Homework gets done before dinner, while dinner is being prepared. Then parents can check on progress without disrupting their routines to much, the kids get parental company and wisdom and the homework get done. All great for the kids. And if it is a quiet zone, then the parent on duty doing the dinner gets some peace and quiet after a day on the job. In that situation I, personally enjoyed the quiet contact with my kids. Plus I kept in touch with their lifely dramas.
Oh and BTW, go the standard desk.
