Microsoft have not made their fortune or their reputation by being profligate, reckless or even vaguely generous for that matter. Nor should they be. As a corporation their executives have legal obligations to advance and protect the interests of the shareholders. That means they don't do anything that won't turn a profit.

The fact that they are not telling us why they are giving this version of Windows away at no cost seems to me more than a little disingenuous. I am cynical, suspicious and distrustful of their motives and not at all comforted by their lack of candor.

For now at least, I will not be following the rest of the lemmings over the Windows 10 cliff.

Peter
They offer it "free" so they can use the open holes to spy on every lemming that uses it.

I am afraid to download windows 10,as there are so many conflicting reports as to it's installation and the so many pitfalls.
I will leave it until I get another computer, which inevitably have it already installed.
Cheers

Windows 10

I've had no problems with the upgrade fom win 8 to win 10. Just when you do the install go custom not express if you are worried about privacy issues. You can then uncheck some of the more invasive things that microsoft want. My wife uses the computer more than me and doesn't have any issues either yet. Cheers, Richard

Possibly a good idea Ron. If you read my third comment down from the top on this link you will get a good idea of what can go wrong.

It was the second time I tried it with exactly same result. The MS advisor in the Win10 program ok'd the Dell for an install, but something wasn't liked by it.
The 2 Lenovos and a HP laptop that is about the same vintage had no probs.

Ah yes, but what about the rest of the system?

I don't know why you would say that. I reckon more people than that used Vista.

The thing is, there really isn't much competition when it comes to operating systems (and part of M$'s strategy has been to keep it that way). AFAIK there is Mac, Linux and Windows. Relatively few people will shell out for the extra cost of the Mac. Even fewer are willing to try Linux (or even know it exists, even though they know Android) and, to be fair, Linux is just getting to the stage where it isn't a nerd's OS. Of the rest I think the great majority use Windows by default rather than making a conscious decision ('that's what was on the computer when I bought it' or 'that's what everyone uses' or 'anything else it too complicated').
