But that's exactly why these new Sony sensors are so good - the DR is excellent even at high ISOs. It's the main reason I would go with a Sony, and did, over a Canon. Sure the 6D has fairly low noise at 6400 but the dynamic range is nowhere near that of the A7s at the same ISO.

If you look at dynamic range comparisons the gain of the Sony over Canon is at low ISO not high ISO where they are largely identical. Typically its also in the shadows not the highlights.

I haven't read anyone else's comparisons. I'm basing my opinion on my personal experience processing widefield astro images with the 5DmkII, mkIII, and 6D compared to processing similar images taken with the A7s. I basically only use ISO6400 and above on the A7s and all my images have much better range than basically anything I did with the Canons.

Is the difference between the A7s and the A7RII similar to the A7R vs A7S ??

I am just wondering if the A7RII has closed the gap somewhat???

Almost certainly but it's not out yet so we'll have to wait and see.

I don't know how valid this argument is but a common response is if you downsize the A7r to 12mp noise levels are quite comparable to the A7s.

A7Rii is supposed to be at least one stop better in high ISO performance so then if you downsize 42.4mp to 12mp then the noise difference may be very little one way or the other.

thanks to all this that contributed for your help, suggestions and advice some top information shared :-)

I will probably go with the Sony but wait for a couple of months to see if there is any plans for a A7SII.

If not I will then make the choice of the A7S or the A7RII and if it looks like the A7RII is very close to the A7S I will just go with the A7RII

Of course if some amazing groundbreaking Camera is released in the interim all bets are off :-)
