So definitely mechanical RA.
load on the gears not making any difference only which side weights ore on.
So something inside catching when it is on one side - wire from led to polar scope - polar scope itself catching but only when laid over on one side.
Something loose that can move onto a rotating surface.
Internally there's only the weight bar top and the polar scope that can engage with the case, I think.
Something along that axis.....hmmm
