This is the kind of attitude that triggers me too. I had similar situations in the past. I usually get all the details of the person(s) involved in a calm voice and orderly manner then make a point in writing to everybody concerned or remotely interested to know about it (usually one level up or their boss). When it hits the marketing dpt it usually goes higher then drops back like a tone of bricks on the offender because they're the ones spending a lot of money to attract customers. Worked every single time. I reckon that if you don't want to deal with public then don't work on a front counter. Simple.

There was a local PO 3 minutes from my place, but they closed it down a few years ago... without notice... just before Christmas. I saw a very old lady from the other side of the road pushing and pushing the door loaded with parcels...
It was run by the same person who used to run the local shop. (He practically split himself.)
It was very convenient to me of course as if they dropped a card in my mailbox without knocking I was at the PO in 3 minutes.... Now...
