Perhaps you could use the Ha filter out of your broken camera on the front of a white flashlight?

Hadn't tried that yet. Good idea.

Another good idea. Actually I have a solar filter on loan at the moment. I could take a shard of that and place in front - same thing. Cool. Will try tonight.

This may seem like astronomical heresy and I may receive a few abusive replies but I have been using a white light source for some time now at it works very well and causes no night vision issues. It is a fully adjustable LED flashlight which can be ramped down as low as fraction of a lumen. In "firefly " mode it pumps out just enough light to read your wrist watch at night at point blank range. Provided you don't look directly into the LED it doesn't do any damage and its way too dim to affect others nearby even if you accidently pointed it at someone.
It is also a great every day carry pocket light which can pump out 200 lumens if you need it. I take it when travelling, staying in hotels, or hiring a car in case of flat tyres etc..
There are a couple of very good lights available. The one I use is from Sunwayman- V11R. It is very small. Its a bit pricey but it is built like a brick dunny.

I also recommend the LED Torch Shop for good service. I have bought a few lights from them.

I had a piece of red Perspex cut to size and a bit of silicone glued on the front of a small led torch, works a treat.

I was at BCF this morning and took a look at the head torches while I was there. Picked up a Coleman CHT4 HEADLAMP for $19.99. 3 modes high/ low/ red LED. Looked quite good and I thought I could just shut my eyes while in white modes.

It is 40 lumens so not going to blind anybody in the next block but should be great for using at close range. I was even happier when I read the instructions and found out that red is the first mode, then low then high. Even better when I read that if you are in 1 mode for more than 10 seconds the next time you hit the switch it will turn the torch off. No having to shut my eyes for white modes
