Hey Striker,
When we built our pier it was a galvanised steel pipe about 5 inch diameter and 4.6 metres long. it was chosen as it fitted our C14 Losmandy mount.
It was concreted into the ground to a depth of 3 metres using 1 cubic metre of concrete. The pipe was then filled with concrete also. It still wobbled. In the end we had to put a casing around the pipe and fill that with concrete also. After that, no more shakes. here is a pic of the final result.

Here's a pic of my observatory, well, not mine alone...still not completed. Dome rotation and door drives still to be done.
We had many problems building it. I would be glad to assist you anytime you have a problem.

here's something you might want to check out. It has a different design , but it's pretty amazing. The entire shed moves on rails...here is the link. When you get to the page it is in the ADOBE ACROBAT READER form. the beginning of the story on the observing shed starts on page #4.
