After Effects is a very cool application and you certainly should pick it up before your student discount expires XD

Regarding writing up a tutorial for this, it took me 20+ hours on-and-off to finish this project, and making a tutorial will take equally long, if not longer I guess. I might try doing one when I got extra bandwidth : )
