Hi Dunk,

We have a long weekend - Monday 10th is a public holiday, so for a stargazing trip both Saturday and Sunday nights are possible. At this stage of the two, Sunday night looks better weather-wise. Watch this thread for updates http://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/s...d.php?t=108186

Also the Northern Sydney Astro group may be out at Turramurra on Friday evening 7th http://nsas.org.au/observing/

Thanks Wavytone, I hadn't figured the public holiday into my calculations so that's a bonus!

I also see the pony club thread - what are the pros and cons of the respective sites? For a Southern Hemisphere noob - I don't want to cause a distraction to anyone doing serious observing with my repeated "wow"s

Ok... The Mt Blackheath and Hargraves sites are about 2h drive from most parts of Sydney, at an altitude of 1000 metres so also expect temps below zero. These are about the limit if you're going for an evening and aiming to be home in the small hours.

The pony club is 2.5 hours to the north, in the hunter valley.

The ASNSW has an observatory with a 16" f7 dob, at Mt Bowen (1.5 hours northwest) and a dark sky site called Wiruna, about 3-3.5 hours drive - but that's an all-weekend effort.

First Time to AU

When I came first time to Australia (rom Europe) I took a 100mm f6 short refractor on a manual alt-az and suitable eyepieces. For the first time in southern skies using every minute out at night with a small telecope I found will beat gettting out there just limited time with a big one.
