OK, you've go me intrigued. What possible justification do they have for that one? The Big Bad Wolf is more active late at night? Everyone has to be home early to avoid turning into a pumpkin? Worksafe inspectors don't want to be called out late at night?

I assume you have the observing area adequately floodlit? Oh, and no one who isn't suitably trained climbing one step up a ladder.

Hi guys my night was a great success I'm one happy girl even if I got just one person hooked I would be happy but I think I got them all hooked hehe woohooo and I couldn't have done it without all the support and advice from all you lovely IIS members ( my little astro family )

After all this time I think I have kept underestimating myself with my knowledge of the night sky I was so worried that I would look stoopid and that I wouldn't be able to answer their questions but amazingly I passed with flying colors they asked me questions all night long and I could answer all of them man I was on fire I supprised myself I think

The night started off with patchy clouds with a little haze around so seeing wasn't 100% but as the night went on the clearer it got, watching the fine crescent moon set was breathtaking for all with a beautiful sunset to boot but unfortunately Due to stupid OH&S the work do was actually over @ 10pm grrrr so then off went the helmets and the safety boots and Jen was in total control I was in my prime time of the evening and away I went spinning johnny around all over the sky hehe (someone just try and stop me from doing what I love)hahaha they would have no chance lol lol
I managed to show them
Jupiter
Orion - and story time of Orion
Eta Carina nebula ( got lots of wows with this one )
47 tuc
Omega Centauri
Tarantula Nebula
Leo Triplets - ( lot and lots of wows seeing these three gems together)
The Sombrero Galaxy
The Ghost of Jupiter
Saturn
Sirius - they loved looking at it through the scope

And a demonstration on how to find true south using the stars the astronomy way and the boy scouts way hehehehe
And I think we all enjoyed playing around with the astronomy apps on my ipad - (Sky Safari) all through the night and playing with the laser pointer pizza & wine was great also, I had my camers set up and took over 100 pictures of the sky to make some star trails demonstrated to them on how to do this (will post when I go through them)
Most of the people left just after 12 but there was a few keen ones that stayed behind to have a scan around Scorpio and Sagittarius and Virgo
I finished up around 3:30am took an hour to pack up then had an early breakfast at hungry jacks then the clouds started to roll in phew good timing the sunrise looked pretty so I ran around to take a few pics and got to bed at 7:30am had to check out of motel @ 10am doh I forgot to organise late check out bugger the motel manager must have seen me come in so late/early he decided not to charge me for the room hahaha
All in all the boss and staff are already organising for me to do another event for them in the near future woooohooo
Thanks again to everyone in here for your friendly advice I love you all to bits muah xo

Good news Jen! It must have been most satisfying. It's amazing how much knowledge someone who is motivated can accumulate in a few years. You can surprise yourself sometimes. I'm also impressed that you pulled an all-nighter, I don't think I could do that anymore.

I was in Mildura last year so I'm curious as to where you set up.

Thanks guys there is nothing more rewarding than seeing the surprised looks on their faces when they look through the scope it's priceless
It's the topic of the week around the office at the moment with talks of around 50 people at the next event yikes haha

David we were on eleventh street up near the aero ovals the baseball field we went up to the back one, there was too much lighting around for my liking and i had the mildura glow in the east but hey it's a work do.... so I couldn't complain too much

OK, I didn't get out that way. The highlights of my visit were the shops, the medical centre and he eye specialist. I did notice, however, that for a place of its size Mildura has a huge number of sporting facilities. We went to a park close to town where there were a dozen netball courts and down by he river there are a large number of tennis courts - grass courts too! I think there are more grass courts there than here and we're at least 5 times the size.

I looked on google street view and I see what you mean about light, there are street lights nearby. We visited the Botanic Garden and that looks like a good area but I think there is a gate that is closed at night.

Oh wow!! I just looked down to the sw of town and found an airfield. There is a photo on streetview that shows that belongs to the Sunraysia Gliders Club and right next to that sign is a sign for the Oasis Stargazer Club Mildura. Do you know about them??

Yes I went on their website which seems to be old and I sent them an email to see if they could help me out but I didn't get a reply so I'm not quite sure if they are still going or not

The next day I went out to Woodsies Gem Store for lunch and we had a ball there was this really kool maze there that took us an hour and a half to get through hehe
