There is special oil you can use called "Salad Bowl Oil". You can buy it from bunnings. It's a citrus based "food safe" oil dressing especially for wood. It was recommended to me by a "pro" wood turner here in town.
It smells divine, and a little goes a long way.
I use it on my chopping boards and salad bowls.
The one i use is a different brand, but I dare say it's very similar.

Steve,

Ecowoodoil is the new company that makes Organoil oils - FANTASTIC products.

I refuse to use Wattyl or FEast Watson stuff - it's utter garbage compared to the Organoil/Ecowoodoil product. Organoils Scandinavian oil is utterly superb!

The only Feat Watson I will use is their stains and their Fine Rubbing Oil

I have used this excellent product on furniture and tripods. It is safe and pleasant smelling. A little goes a long way so it is more economical than the price might suggest.

Yep I love Camphor Laurel. Here is a cheese board I created for a customer. The unique colours and patterns from Camphor is why I love to work with it.

Regards,
Shane.

The Red Mahogany is what I could get my hands on. Couldn't source camphor laurel. Plus, the weight of the Mahogany makes one heck of a statement!

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll see which way I go after re-reading these posts. A lot of considered suggestions.

Mineral oil (also known as paraffin oil) is usually recommended as it doesn't oxidize as much as vegetable oils.
I've also used walnut oil & coconut oil with great success.

I have used Ikea 'Bethalda' wood oil for 6 years on my wooden kitchen benches. Water wash up, no stink, safe to eat off and no build up. Must have more than 40 coats of it on, and the wood looks terrific.

Definitely use the Paraffin oil/liquid, but not that from hardware stores as already mentioned. Regardless of weather food will be on the board directly, I would use this. You never know when they might decide to serve up some cheese and crackers on that board. Best to be safe.

I usually get it from Woolworths or the chemist. It's in a small blue bottle ...

Enjoy!
