Don't forget fellas that Stuart wants this camera for normal photography too. With the IR filter removed, it does weird things to the white balance and will give your daytime pics an eerie red glow due to the colour shift...great for nebulae but not a good look for people

While I conceed that the red and Ha sensitivity is not spectacular with the current crop of DSLR's, it is somewhat over-rated I feel.
Most of my astro shots have had some, and for globs etc it is less important.
If solely astro, then yes, buy a Hutech 300D with no filter. If all round, just buy the stock model.

I agree Gary, Some images actually improve with the Ha filter. The trifid for instance. The blue is more balanced against the red and give a stuinning result. See my version here
M42 (orion) also benefits in my opinion.

Just my 2c worth, but with the IR filter removed, why not add a lens IR filter if one wants to do normal daylight photography. I believe these just screw on to the normal lens, and cost about 30bucks.

That's what I thought Exfso (see earlier post), but from the feed back here it sounds like that won't work for autofocus and colour balance. Don't understand why though, but then I'm pretty new at this sort of stuff.

Odd, sounds like there are IR filters and "IR" filters. got me wacked. I would like to know why as I am thinking of getting one of these cameras down the track. Have to let the flack die down from my Tak Purchase etc..LOL

You know fellas, I might just start a new women's awareness group just for laughs...I'll head the first meeting up with a powerpoint presentation titled: "Getting to know your husband's nagler - the real cost of an eyepiece".
exfso, I read somewhere that you can actually achieve the correct colour balance and white balance with special kinds of filter or lens attachment but I just can't remember the site. I'll post it later when I find it, it has pics of shots with IR filter removed before and after these attachments with comparision shots to an unmodified 300d. I promise I'll post it up later (still at work...shhh...I'm not here...)

Did some initial scouting today on prices/info today on the canon300d ......seems for new the link offered by Paul {RR} i think...teds digital something .....offers pretty good prices. It seems as far as picture quality goes the canon gets good reviews , the standard lens is rated as a begainers one ...EF-s type...the Nikon d70 has more creative features plus maybe a more robust body although for astrononmy use the canon body is light but im worried about some issues with mirror slap without a locking feature . Ive come across some Canon 10ds selling for below 1500 and these have the added features that equal the D70 although its a question of going for new or used . To help i picked up a pretty good publication from the newsagency titled Which Camera , some good info on cameras and lenses and reviews and prices all with a Aus input .

There is a firmware hack for the Canon that give it similar features to the 10D. (I think I've opsted this before somewhere. )I've asked around at CN about it and those that have responded give it the full thumbs up. One of the reasons for the hack apparently is to give the 300D mirror lock up capabilities, ISO3200 speed, amongst other features. From what I've been able to find out the 300D is very very similar to the 10 except for the firmware

You may want to check it out at this link. It makes for an interesting read

I use the camera hack on my 300d and have had no problems with it, but I have heard of one or two horror stories on digicamhacking group. They are few and far between & are generally combined with "stupidness" like re-flashing with a flat battery! (despite the warmings!).
Mainly only use the mirror lock-up feature. I won't touch 3200ISO as 1600 is noisy enough anyway!
