Hi, let me introduce myself. I'm Eddie, a retired old, decrepit cross-bred dog and I'm not even sure what I'm doing here (not that that would surprise family or friends!). So whilst here I might as well give some history. I first became interested in Astronomy as a pup, and recall as a very young pup in Wiltshire, UK, being fascinated by the night sky and had as apparatus, only my eyes, which I did not fully appreciate then and which, sadly, I miss very much now. No, I'm not blind (at least not when sober) but my eyes are not what they were. So, from there to my early teens in Lancashire, and still fascinated by the night sky...that is, whenever I could see it. I bought an el-cheapo 40mm telescope (bad decision but all I could afford then) and soon learned that such was not at all suited to decent (or even indecent) viewing, so back to my original apparatus...my eyes which is all I've had to date, accept for a long series of various binoculars. Sadly, I gradually lost much of my interest as other activities took hold. Such unsavory things as work and watching football, books, girls and things (the girls was to go the same way as astronomy until my future wife got hold of me...still has!) In '76 I came to Oz and always promised myself that I'd get a reasonable telescope as I still had the urge to explore the skies, but the price was always too much. Finally, last Dec. whilst on hols in New York, I finally bit the bullet and bought one at B&H. A Nexstar 6SE. Yes I know, not good for the trade here but it was either a 4" here, or 6" there, which ended up cheaper than the 4" here including shipping! So here I am, having to relearn a lot, and learn gigantic amounts more. I may well be leaning heavily on the group. I think I'd better finish before I bore the life out of you all.
Eddie

Hi Eddie,
Welcome
Your post was a lot of fun to read.
Don't be afraid to ask questions, even if they sound silly as we all had to start somewhere. IIS really is such a great community with so much help at hand, you won't wrong.

Hi Eddie, if you can ask a question more basic than some of mine I will be impressed.
A few weeks after I got my first scope i was looking through it to align the finder scope when I noticed an incredibly thick line going straight across my primary. Darn near burst into tears cause I live in the Philippines and getting a mirror re figured is impossible.
Imagine my relief when i realized it was simply a highly magnified spiders web.
Welcome to the group.

Hi Eddie
Come here boy. Sit. Now listen.
Ok, good boy. There are lots of things to see up there so don't be like those silly kelpies down the road. In so much of a hurry that they chase their tails all day
Just set your gear up, get some Scmacko's, calm down, and when it's dark check out all the goodies up there.
Pleeease don't get all growly and howl when the Moon is out
It gives all of us Amateur Astronomers a bad name
That's a good boy
Oh! and welcome

regarding dogs, did you hear the one about the bloke who went to the
psychiatrist ?
Doctor: so how long exactly have you thought you were a dog?
Patient: Oh, quite a while now. I just like eating dog food you know,
dog biscuits, tinned food....I just feel like I am a dog...
Doctor: Oh I'm sure that will soon pass, it might just be a phase you
are going through. It's nothing to worry about......anyway I see you
have a cast on your leg, how did you break your leg?
Patient: Oh I was just sitting in the middle of the road one day,
licking my balls, and got hit by a car.

Hi Eddie,
I'm still very much a learner after a couple of years here.
It's nice rediscovering a childhood passion later in life, isn't it.
You've come to the right place.

Hi Eddie and welcome aboard. King Charles Cavalier Spaniel, Blenheim eh ? You got some canine blue blood there. My ex and I used to have them, lovely wee dog.
Yep, they're a good bunch here, very helpful and friendly. There are plenty of us newbies hanging around at various stages of our obsession. I'm 10 months back into it after a long absence ( ~ 40 years ! ) and already contemplating a major purchase to satsify my needs. Just take it step by step, don't be afraid to ask or seek advice and keep your credit card handy.

Thanks Brent, seems there are quite a few of us 'old dogs' here. We may have left the hobby for some time but it does appear to always remain in the blood. As for my pick, it was loved pooch 'Whiksy', who died last year, some 15 years old. Still miss him heaps....
Eddie
