Thanks to all the people that provided info,before i purchased new lens
I ended up buying a 70 to 200 mm L F2.8,it has arrived,and have given a very quick test,all looks good,i will post a few pics i took this morning,as
the thread grows.
It really is helpfull these forum sites,before one buys a item.
I checked out reviews of this lens on other sites,and it rated very well.
I was thinking about a 24 to 70 L,but it appeared there were good copies and bad copies of that lens,there's a big thread running about them.anyhow i got this one now,it will be my last L purchase for sometime!
I have a 70-200 F2.8 non IS and it is tack sharp through the range. Great for the kids sport (among other things).
I also have the 24-70. I was never happy with its sharpness and recently it failed to get even close to focus. Sent it back to Canon and they replaced 3 spacers. $45 for the parts and $350 for labour. When asked why they needed replacing I was told wear and tear! Interesting as I rarely used it. I still think the focus is not tack sharp and it lacks a bit of contrast.

there is a big thread running on POTN,and the amount of people that have similar experiences to you,is a large amount,i will give it the 'wide berth'.
i have a friend who makes high class fashion gear,and he takes his own photos of his creations on the ladies,with the 24-70,and he showed me
some of the photos,i noticed lens flare on a few of the pics.
So i may eventually get a 35 mm L prime
I will post some more pics of lens testing in terestrial subjects soon
If you're looking for something in the wider end of the spectrum, I can strongly recommend the Canon 16-35 F/2.8L.. Pricey, but worth the dollars... Too wide for some though..

The other night I was playing around with spacing between the 70-200 lens and the QHY9 and the attached crops are 200% enlarged from a single 10 second test exposure of the SMC with the 70-200 2.8 non-IS set to 135mm and f2.8. One of the crops is NGC346 near the centre of the frame, and the other crop is towards the edge of the frame and is 47 Tucanae. No sharpening has been applied, just a strong logarithmic curve to bring up the background.
The image scale in these crops is 2.7 micron per pixel, or 4" arc secs pixel. Also the image is unfiltered, i.e no IR or UV block filter. The field of view of the whole image is 8 x 6 degrees. With this setup I can potentially image the entire night sky down to mag 15 in one night.
