Urgent! decision being made today ..
I am in the process of buying a DSLR, and i need to make a choice today
my choices are
Canon D450
Canon D1000
I know the D450 is the superior camera, but i dont intend on doing alot of terrestrial photography with it, the 1000D still has live view, and i am wondering, is there really that much of a difference as far as a complete novice imager is concerened?
many thanks

450D...has a bigger back view screen..makes it easier for live view focusing (for astro work)......and 450D is 14 bit Analogue to digital converters. 1000D is 12 bit AD. 450D has faster frame rate as well.
I got 450D with basic 18/55 IS lens for $954.

Hi Duncan,
Sure you can get started with the 1000D
I had the same decision to make as you ( Ive got an Ed80, heq5 pro too) and the difference between the 1000D and 450D was only a few hundred more so I went with the 450D in Dec- if it was 300 + diff I probably would have started with the 1000.
The 450D is fabulous and as a newbie Im thrilled with the results.
Either way you will do well.
good luck
cheers

Same decision process here as well.
1000D is a good camera as well. But what tipped me was the bigger view screen ....it really helps when live focusing with screen magnification of 10X.
Also frame rate. The 450D can take more shots per second. I used mine lately at Luna park capturing kids on rides mid flight...no problems.

Hi Duncan,
I went the other way, I bought a 1000d about two weeks ago, $1119 for the Twin IS kit and 4G card delivered.
Sure the 450 has a bigger screen for live view on the camera, but I use "live view" through my PC using the EOS Utility so I have a 12 inch view screen, beats the heck out of 2.5 or 2.7 inch screens. Plus I can remote focus the lens from the utility as well.
Again I dont have a scope I can really look through with a cam, so am piggybacking it on my ETX125 with a lens, you can see on of my shots in the DS photo section of the southern cross from 2 days ago.
It is nice and light as well.

Seems the consensus on the photography forums is that in theory 14bit images should exhibit "4 times as much tonal information as a 12-bit ones", but in reality a "14 bit RAW doesn't produce a visible improvement in tonal richness" over a 12bit RAW image. Something to consider!?
But, astroimaging is a cruel mistress and will be very quick to highlight the flaws and short-comings of any imaging system - so, as with all things astro...go for the best you can afford.
My vote is the 450D, but I'm sure either one will not disappoint you in their performances.
Good Luck
Doug

Hi Duncan,
HBOutlet was where i bought mine from. Paid for it on the Tuesday after easter with a direct deposit, box arrived Thursday afternoon.
Check them for both 450 and 1000 prices.
I searched for pricing using www.staticice.com.au and they came out cheapest by a long way.
And no, I dont work for them.

the 500d has just become available in body kit for $1299.00.Its a decent upgrade on the 450d,and if you dont need generic lenses(just doing prime focus)its definatly worth a look.on the other hand, there are some good deals around on the 450 before the 500 is officially released.the 500 has some sweet upgrades like hd movie mode and 50d censor.
