I just bought a Canon 20D!
Well as a combined xmas/birthday present, I bought myself a Canon 20D off ebay. Picked it up for a pretty good price.
So now i'll have the 20D and the 350D. I'll get one of them modded (filter removal only, not cooled) and dedicate it to astro use, and keep the other for terrestrial use.
RB (whose advice is golden) reckons the 20D is better suited as the terrestrial camera, and use the 350D as the astro-camera.
Unfortunately the 20D requires a different battery from the 350D, and probably different connectors for the timer remote etc, but I'll gather these items over the next month or two.
I'm excited!

The 20D will always have better image quality in terms of noise at higher ISO's so as the astro cam, it would excel.. on the other hand, it would excel for terrestrial imaging also... I'd probably go the other way around and mod the 20D, but thats because im an astro nut!
Congrats on the new toy mate! you will be very happy with it, regardless of what task you dedicate it to.

Congrats Mike.
Glad you got it.
You'll have to weigh up which will be it's primary use.
I'd say keeping the 20D for terrestrial will serve you very well.
If you will be doing more astro than terrestrial then get it modded and use it for astro.
Either way you've got the best of both because the 350D is still an excellent model for astro, and you already have got it setup as such with the necessary cables etc.
The only thing I'd suggest is doing some tests and deciding which will serve you better for which application.
Anyway it's great buy and a good addition to the kit.

Well done Mike!
Now all you'll want is some of that L series glass to go with it.

Thanks guys, i'm very pleased.
I'd love some L series glass but that's where the price comes in! That'll have to be some time away. The next cost is actually modding one of the cameras.
I'll take some side by side shots with the same lens in the same conditions, both during the day and at night, and decide which one to keep for astro and which one to keep for daytime use.
In reality, I'll probably use the terrestrial camera more so I'll probably use the "best" camera for that. That might be the 20D.
I've already ordered a battery charger and 2 extra batteries (the 20D isn't coming with a battery charger), and will order an aputure timer remote today.
I guess the next thing I need is 12v power for it. Any recommendations?

More megapixels, live focus. They're the things I know off the top of my head. Someone else will be able to say more.

I've just bought the wireless remote for now.
I'll get the timer remote at a later time if and when I need it.

Have both the 350D and 20D. Modded the 20D and its got far less noise than the 350D. Suggest the 20D is the one to mod for astro work.

Can remote liveview run sending back frames whilst a shot is being taken - or is that only a feature on Digic 4 gives you on the 5 and 50 models - anyone know?

Congrats Mike.
It's a fantastic camera.
I'd be checking the sensor of each before choosing which one to mod.
A quick 1 or 2 minute guided exposure from each, at prime focus, and any imperfections will become apparent.
My 20d gives my stars coma on the upper left hand side of each photo, but I can crop them out.
Something like that isn't so important for terrestrial work, but a pain for the night time stuff.

Mike - well done - can you confirm is the 350D a 12 bit camera and the 20D a 14 bit (A/D convertors)?
I'd be interested in some shots of typical targets - say M42 or faint Nebulae to see if the more sensitive convertors are a really boon to astrophotography!

I still have my 20D and for terrestial imaging it is hard to beat. The only thing the 5DH does better is the full frame and noise a high ISO. It is built like a tank ie full metal case so sensor heat is better dissipated. The shutter mechanism also lasts far longer than the ***D's.
