A filter for Mono deep sky capture

Adverse weather with total sky cover for weeks has prevented me from experimenting with the DMK mono long exposure. A clear sky on the 8th and after capturing 20 moon shots focused on the only star visible without resetting up the scope and at an 8.5 second exposure took 4 frames. I was surprised to find I had captured a large number of stars of different magnitude. Next clear sky and no moon I plan to try and capture something of interest. This begs the question: would I do better using a suitable filter?
